City selects company to perform lead service line inventory

A lead service line inventory will be moving forward after the Graham City Council awarded a contract to Core & Main, LP to complete the project.

In September, the city was presented a cost and scope of work for the lead service inventory by its contracted engineering firm Jacob and Martin as it works to remedy a violation from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

The city council granted the city manager the authority to create a capital project of up to $600,000 to move the process forward.

Pulling the Plug: Plug Power suspends Project Limestone in Young County

Plug Power announced it would be suspending activities related to the U.S. Department of Energy’s loan which was to assist with financing the construction of up to six hydrogen facility projects, including one in Young County.

Plug Power provides electrolyzers, liquid hydrogen, fuel cell systems, storage tanks and fueling infrastructure to industries such as material handling, industrial applications and energy producers.

GISD displaying Ten Commandments posters in classrooms

After receiving an anonymous donation of Ten Commandments posters, the district is complying with Texas Senate Bill 10 to display those posters within its classrooms.

The bill was signed into state law Friday, June 20 by Gov. Greg Abbott and was enacted beginning with the 2025-2026 school year. 

GISD Chief of Student Services Officer Joe Gordy notified parents and guardians Saturday, Nov. 15 of the installation of the posters through the district’s online resource ParentSquare.

County rejects bids on courthouse gazebo

The Young County Commissioners Court chose not to proceed with bids to construct a new courthouse gazebo.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Jimmy Wiley was the sole commissioner to give comment Monday, Nov. 17 on the reasoning for the decision. 

“We have decided since the bids have come out to be so high that we will just go ahead and reject them all and put that on a different item in the future,” Wiley said. 

Precinct 1 Commissioner Stacy Creswell made the motion to reject all of the bids for the gazebo and the motion was passed unanimously 5-0.

Young County Arena closes out of caution due to EHV-1 outbreak

While no local cases of Equine Herpesvirus-1 have been reported, out of an abundance of caution the Young County Arena has been closed to horse events due to a recent outbreak.

EHV-1 causes an upper respiratory disease and abortions or stillbirths in horses. The virus can cause a neurological disease called equine herpes myeloencephalopathy, which can be fatal, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Gifting to those in need: Supporting area seniors through Elder Angel Trees

The Elder Angel Tree program has become a tradition of giving in Graham with gifts provided to seniors in need. That tradition continues this holiday season with multiple tree locations.

Alongside handmade products at the Holiday Market on display at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center through Saturday, Dec. 20, an Elder Angel Tree is on display. The museum is located at 510 Third St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Attendance, enrollment improvements focus of GISD strategic plan

Within the Graham ISD strategic plan is a goal to achieve a higher student attendance rate and communication plan and the district is working to make those efforts a reality.

The district’s strategic plan set a student attendance rate goal of 97% district wide and sought to create a plan to communicate the benefits of increasing student attendance and how to communicate that to the stakeholders of the district.

GISD CFO Gary Browning provided an update to the school board Wednesday, Nov. 12 regarding the district’s efforts so far.

Grahammy nominations open through January

The Graham Chamber of Commerce opened nominations last week for its annual Grahammy awards honoring those going above and beyond in service and commitment to the community, or promoting local commerce.

The organization annually honors members of the community and businesses through the awards ceremony held in conjunction with the Graham Chamber Banquet.

Winners are chosen based on nominations from the community. All nominations are reviewed by a committee consisting of chamber board members who select the final winners.

Throckmorton woman dies in one-vehicle wreck

A fatal wreck occurred Wednesday on Hwy. 16 South when a vehicle struck the side of a building.

Jessica Fay Goode, 47, of Throckmorton was the sole occupant of the vehicle involved in the wreck Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the 1300 block of Hwy. 16 South, according to a release from Graham City Manager Eric Garretty.

First responders were dispatched to the wreck with possible entrapment around 2:46 p.m. Nov. 12.
