The Salvation Army kettle campaign begins next week

The giving season is kicking off next week as The Salvation Army’s annual kettle fundraising campaign takes off in Graham.

The annual kettle campaign begins Thursday, Nov. 20 and continues through Tuesday, Dec. 23, starting first at Walmart and later at United Supermarkets. 

The Walmart location opens on Nov. 20 followed by United Supermarkets on Nov. 28.

The organization is also looking to have three donation locations set up on the downtown square during the annual Christmas stroll Thursday, Dec. 4.

Rush of candidates file for county positions

After the filing period for Republican and Democratic candidates opened this weekend for the March primaries, candidates have come out to add their names on the ballot.

Filing opened Saturday, Nov. 8 and the deadline for primary and independent candidates filing a declaration of intent is Monday, Dec. 8. 

As of Thursday, Nov. 13, candidates that filed for the position of Young County Judge are incumbent Win Graham, along with candidates Donald Sexton and former Young County Judge John Bullock.

Solar developer hears local concerns regarding project

As a way to provide information and a venue to address community questions, Titus LCV, the developers behind a solar and battery storage project in Young County, held a town hall meeting last week.

Young County is currently in talks with Titus LCV regarding a potential tax abatement for the Tapaderos solar project, a 2,600-acre, 300 megawatt solar power facility with 200 megawatts of battery storage seven miles west of Eliasville.

Public meeting next week for city comprehensive plan

The city of Graham is inviting residents to help build the future by sharing their ideas for the comprehensive plan under development.

A come-and-go town hall meeting is being held from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17 at the North Central Texas College multipurpose room at 928 Cherry St. 

The Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee met Thursday, Oct. 16 and heard from Dalton Aiken and Caitlyn Higgins of Public Management Inc., the grant administrators and planning firm for the project.

Food pantry sees rise in local need

After requesting donations at the end of October due to ongoing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program halts from the government shutdown, Graham Food Pantry is seeing an increase in clients and need.

The Graham Food Pantry is under the umbrella organization of the Graham Crisis Center which is operated by Executive Director Joy Petersen. The executive director shared a message Sunday, Oct. 19 regarding the shutdown and its local impact.

City discusses private operation of convenience station

KC Dumpsters approached the Graham City Council with the concept of a partnership for operation of the city’s convenience station.

The city of Graham entered into a contract with KC Dumpsters to provide garbage collection services starting Monday, Sept. 1.

KC Dumpsters Owner Adam Anderle made a presentation before the city council Thursday, Nov. 6 regarding the proposal and expressing interest in entering into a public, private partnership under contract.

State voters approve 17 constitutional amendments

Voting ended Tuesday with a 15.2% overall turnout in Young County, with all 17 constitutional amendments proposed on the November ballot approved by voters in the county and statewide.

County turnout was down by almost 4% in comparison to the last constitutional amendment election in November 2023.

Early voting was held from Monday, Oct. 20 through Friday, Oct. 31 at two locations in the county. Election day was Tuesday, Nov. 4 at five locations.

(ALEX HAVARDANSKY | THE GRAHAM LEADER) Completed work on the Firemen’s Park trail project that is the final piece of improvement work for the park utilizing matching funding awarded by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Firemen’s Park trail completed

Work has been completed on a trail project at Firemen’s Park with a celebration of the new addition scheduled for later this month.

The Graham City Council approved Finco Family Enterprises LCC in April to complete the work on the project which widened, improved and added trails in Firemen’s Park. 

The company was one of five that submitted bid proposals in five parts to the city on or before Wednesday, July 9.

Data center parties draw in local groups

Those for and against a proposed data center project located between FM 209 and FM 61 have been meeting with the public and area entities to promote their cause.

Last week, members of Stream Data Centers, Headwaters Site Development and local members of Walker Ranch Development LLC met with various groups within the city including the Graham Industrial Association and members of the Concerned Citizens of Young County opposition group.
