City, GISD working on beer, wine sales ban near schools

The Graham ISD board of trustees approved and submitted a request to the City of Graham to prohibit alcohol sales within 1,000 feet of any GISD campus Wednesday. The submission will only take effect if the November 2016 ballot measure to allow the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption is passed and the Graham City Council approves the GISD request.

Young County SOS meal draws hundreds

Graham Fire Trucks with ladders raised welcomed first responders to the Young County Serving Our Servants meal, held Saturday at the American Legion Building. The event provided the county's first responders and their immediate families with a free barbecue meal, while others could pay for their lunches to help with costs and to boost a fund created to assist first responders in times of emergency.

All Texas counties now testing for Zika virus

The Young County AgriLife Extension office got the job from the state of placing mosquito testing kits around the county to keep a tight watch for the spread of the Zika virus. Young County is one of the 254 Texas counties testing their area for Zika, according to Young County Extension Agent Justin Rogers. There is currently no vaccine or medicine for treating Zika, according the Center for Disease Control,and the virus can potentially be passed from a pregnant woman to her child, causing birth defect or other severe fetal brain defects.

County passes budget, higher tax rate for coming year

County Commissioners on Monday approved the FY2017 budget and an increase in the property tax rate for Young County residents. The effective tax rate was set at $0.622249 per $100 in property value and the rollback rate was set at $0.747577 per $100 property value. The county accepted a proposed tax rate of $0.741629 per $100 of property value, an increase of $0.173 from the current rate of $0.5687 per $100 in valuation. The effective rate is the rate needed to come up with the same amount of money as was brought in the previous year.

New concert season features wide variety of performers

The Graham Concert Association recently announced its schedule for the 2016-17 season, which contains six shows starting in September and extending through February. The association kicks off its new season of performances with the Grammy-winning Light Crust Doughboys at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Graham Memorial Auditorium. Tickets for all performances at the memorial auditorium are available at the door for $20 for adults, $5 for students and season passes are available for $75.

Council lowers water rates, offers disconnect reprieve program

Graham City Council passed an ordinance Thursday lowering all Graham water rates after public outcry over higher bills since new water meters came online in mid-June. A full house of local residents packed the Graham Visitor and Business Center and spoke their minds about the recent water bills. Valerie Todd spoke first during the public forum, talking about the lack of warning by the city on how the new meters would affect water bills. “I would not have purchased new grass nor water if I knew it would have affected my bills so immensely.

Seymour Police Department has confirmed that Olney Advocate publisher Kurt McCord shot himself in the head early Tuesday morning in the Seymour hospital’s parking lot as police approached his vehicle. An SPD press release issued just before 11 a.m. today said that agency got a call from the Wichita Falls Police Department about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6. WFPD let the Seymour police know that McCord was the suspect in a domestic-related shooting that had just taken place in Wichita Falls, and might be headed to Seymour.
