Data center opposition hosts additional public outreach

An opposition group to data centers in Young County invited the public out to properties adjacent to the proposed project in an effort to share their views on the proposal. 

The opposition group Concerns Citizens of Young County held the event Saturday, Oct. 25 at Mote Farm and Pea Ridge Pecans adjacent to a property that could be a part of a proposed center from Stream Data Centers.

Coloring our world: Henderson pursues passion for mural artwork

After graduating in 2021 from Graham High School, Gaven Henderson’s long journey led him to pursue a passion in something that could be experienced by all–mural artwork.

After attending Texas Tech University and obtaining a degree in mechanical engineering, Henderson had his sights set on another future that was filled with artwork. His interest started at GHS with encouragement from his art teacher Christie Andrews.

Texas State Parks to have free admission next Sunday

In honor of Texas State Parks Day, all state parks will have free admission next Sunday.

Stemming from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department centennial in 2023, the celebration of state parks allows anyone to visit a park Sunday, Nov. 2 for free. 

“We hope that Texas State Parks Day will inspire all Texans to get outside and explore what our great state has to offer,” said Rodney Franklin, State Parks Division Director. “We encourage you to spend time with family and discover what makes our state parks so special.”

Conquering the hill: Spivey Hill Challenge takes off in November

Runners will have the opportunity to take on the Spivey Hill Challenge at the beginning of November while giving back to local organizations. 

Since beginning in 2015, the race has raised over $100,000 benefiting the Haitian orphanage Hands and Feet and the local organizations of Garments of Grace, Shine On and HERO House.

This year’s race will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 starting and ending at Firemen’s Park in Graham. The event will consist of a 5K, Walk & Talk, Fun Run and a virtual 5K.

Five teams met with local banks to request loans as a part of the competition with Graham Junior High School and the Graham Chamber of Commerce.

Hot Chocolicious building future entrepreneurs

Five teams of Graham Junior High School students have started laying the groundwork for a hot chocolate business while building their entrepreneurial skills through the Hot Chocolicious competition.

The hot chocolate competition is organized by the Graham Chamber of Commerce and draws in teams from the GJHS Builders Club to plan and build their own hot chocolate business from scratch.

City presented preliminary community survey results

Work is underway to chart the future of Graham as a city comprehensive plan is under development utilizing feedback from a recent community survey. 

The Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee met Thursday, Oct. 16 and were presented the survey results from Dalton Aiken and Caitlyn Higgins of Public Management Inc., the grant administrators and planning firm for the project.

Heart of Graham: Community supporting local coach in need

Graham High School is starting a new tradition this season with their last regular season football game being named their “Heart of Graham” game.

This will be a special night each year where the community will rally around someone in need. 

“Heart of Graham is designed by Graham Athletics to give back to a community member that has encountered a traumatic life misfortune,” Graham ISD said in a release.

This year, those being recognized by the community are coach John Tuggle and his family.

Food pantry seeks local donations after potential halt of SNAP

The Graham Food Pantry is asking for donations for those who could be impacted due to the loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from the ongoing government shutdown.

The federal government has been shut down since midnight Wednesday, Oct. 1, with benefits and other areas of federal funding impacted.

Texas Health and Human Services announced that SNAP benefits for November will not be issued if the federal government shutdown continues past Monday, Oct. 27. HHSC stated it will issue SNAP benefits as soon as the department receives new federal guidance.
