GRMC expansion project nearly complete

After many months of planning, development and delays, Graham Regional Medical Center has nearly reached the finish line on its newest expansion of the hospital. 

GRMC CEO Shane Kernell spoke on the newest added features to the hospital that come along with its expansion. The CEO stated in a press release that the goal of this project was to “enhance patient care, accessibility and workflow efficiency.”

Student showcase: Area students displaying art at OPOMAC in April

For another year, the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center is hosting artwork from area students in celebration of Youth Art Month.

After capping off their Heart of the Book Caldecott Medal exhibit last week at the OPOMAC, the center is hosting creative works from area art students through Thursday, April 24.

Youth Art Month is administered by the Council for Art Education and promotes school art programs. 

Graham High School Art Teacher Christie Andrews said the annual exhibit is a celebration of area students and their creativity.

Severe weather hits area

After wind, rain and hail blew through the area, city crews and first responders worked overnight and into the morning clearing roadways to ensure the safety of area residents.

First responders across the county responded to down power lines, trees, vehicle wrecks and will be continuing their efforts throughout the day.

GHS One-Act Play advances to bi-district

One-Act Play students from Graham High School competed in the District 6-4A contest and are advancing to bi-district for their performance of “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

The students competed in the contest Friday, March 28 in Stephenville. The OAP participants have been hard at work on the performance since January. 

OAP and Theatre Director Katie Huitt said the students have been committed to honoring the real characters portrayed onstage and giving tribute to the victims.

Humane society seeking support as shelter remains at capacity

As spring makes way to summer the Humane Society of Young County continues to see an influx of both dogs and cats at the area shelter and is seeking community support.

The shelter located at 120 Craig St. in Graham is a private nonprofit organization that contracts with cities of Graham, Olney and Newcastle as well as Young County. 

HSYC Director Shelby Brogdon said the shelter has been working on adoptions but the intake has been consistent.

Week of the Young Child takes off next week

A celebration of early childhood educators will be held next week as the Week of the Young Child activities and parade take off around the downtown square in Graham.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) organizes the Week of the Young Child event nationally while a committee establishes the local event.

NAEYC is an early childhood education association with thousands of members and a network of over 300 local, state and regional affiliates.

Graham’s sales tax drops as city continues budget planning

After seeing a minor boost in sales tax in February, the city of Graham saw another drop in returns for March as planning efforts for the next budget cycle continue.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Wednesday, March 12 that his department would be sending cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $1.1 billion in local sales tax allocation for March, 10.2% more than March 2024.

Thats what Graham’s very own Austin Rodgers had to say about the community that raised him and propelled him to medical stardom. 

After graduating this spring from Texas Tech University with a master’s degree in biomedical science, Rodgers is taking the next step of his journey in healthcare.

Voter registration deadline next week

Next week is the final opportunity to register to vote in the upcoming May local elections for Graham and Newcastle.

The city of Graham, Graham ISD and Newcastle ISD will have contested elections upcoming in May after candidates filed for open seats on the city council and district board of trustees.

The last day to register to vote in the election will be Thursday, April 3. To register, a voter can complete a registration application and return it to the Young County election office at the Young County Annex at 417 Second St.

Crawfish and Cannons, Goodnight Loving-Run taking off in April

The blast of cannon fire, the smell of crawfish and the sights of Young County will be on display in two weeks for the Crawfish and Cannons and Goodnight-Loving Run events.

The fifth annual Goodnight-Loving Run kicks off the day Saturday, April 12 with a 5K, 10K and half marathon starting at the entrance of Fort Belknap in Newcastle.
