Sweet treats: Braddock family Cookie Day returns Friday

For over 60 years, Mary Braddock has invited the community for cookies and the holiday tradition continues Friday. 

The Braddock family will have thousands of cookies available for free from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13 at 1010 Westwood Dr.

The holiday tradition started in 1958 and has grown to welcome hundreds of visitors each year looking for a plate of cookies made by Braddock and her family. 

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) A two-vehicle wreck Saturday, Nov. 30 resulted in one driver being airlifted and the other driver along with two passengers being transported to Graham Regional Medical Center. According to Graham Police Department, the contributing factors of the wreck are still under investigation.

One airlifted, multiple injured in two-vehicle wreck

A two-vehicle wreck Saturday resulted in one driver being airlifted and multiple others being injured.

GPD officers responded to a reported wreck with injuries Saturday, Nov. 30 at the intersection of Fourth Street and U.S. Hwy. 380.

During an investigation of the wreck, GPD officers learned a 2007 Red Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Cody Polvado, 36, of Bryson, was towing a trailer while traveling east in the 1800 block of U.S. Hwy. 380 and was nearing the end of the curve on the roadway beyond the intersection.

Tour of Homes next week benefiting library

The annual Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Club Tour of Homes tradition continues next week with four local homes, a church and a local businesses decorated for the season.

The first tour was held over 55 years ago on Dec. 15, 1966, with five homes available for viewing to raise funding for the Library of Graham. Since then, the event has served as a benefit for the local library.

This year’s event will be held from 1:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, and admission will be $20 by cash or check.

TxDOT enhanced mobility public workshop next week

The public will be able to provide input to help shape public transit services for seniors and individuals with disabilities in rural and small communities during and following a virtual workshop next week.

The live virtual workshop from the Texas Department of Transportation will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10 at txdot.gov by searching Enhanced Mobility 5310. 

State Capital Highlights: Deportation vow alarms construction industry


The state’s construction industry is voicing concern that President-elect Trump’s vow to deport millions of undocumented immigrants would cause major labor shortfalls, according to the Texas Standard. “It would devastate our industry, we wouldn’t finish our highways, we wouldn’t finish our schools,” said Stan Marek, CEO of Marek, a Houston-based commercial and residential construction giant. “Housing would disappear. I think they’d lose half their labor.”

The treatment plant distributes drinking water to residents of Graham and Young County through its wholesale water customers. The city recently received a grant to purchase generators for the water treatment facility in the event of a power outage.

City receives state, federal grants for emergency services

The city of Graham was recently awarded grants totaling over $425,000 from the Texas A&M Forest Service and Federal Emergency Management Agency for backup power at the water treatment plant and new fire equipment.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), on behalf of FEMA, issued a grant of $403,719.82 to the city of Graham under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The grant will be used to fund emergency backup power in the event of an outage at the water treatment plant.

Graham PD investigating projectile hitting Brazos Street home

Graham Police Department is investigating a “projectile” that struck through a residence on Brazos Street this week.

According to the Young County blotter, GPD officers responded around 6:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25 to Brazos Street for suspicious circumstances. 

Upon responding to the residence in the 800 block of Brazos Street, GPD officers discovered a projectile had entered the residence through the window and struck the interior, according to a release from GPD Chief Brent Bullock.

No injuries resulted from the entry of the projectile into the residence.

Holiday double feature: Authors Day Book Festival, Santa at the Library next weekend

The Library of Graham is connecting the community with local and regional authors and continuing a holiday tradition during the Authors Day Book Festival and Santa at the Library events.

The events will be held Saturday, Dec. 7 at the library located at 910 Cherry St. The Authors Day Book Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library, with seven local authors scheduled to attend.
