County adopts slight tax rate decrease, raises salaries

Following months of work, Young County commissioners officially adopted the fiscal year 2024-2025 budget and tax rate of $0.586353 per $100 valuation, which is slightly lower than last year’s rate.

Commissioners hosted public hearings Monday, Aug. 26 to discuss and hear from local citizens regarding the proposed tax rate and budget. Following the public hearings, commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of adopting the budget and tax rate, with Precinct 3 Commissioner Stacey Rogers voting against.

County reassessing renovation of courthouse office

With multiple county offices moving to the newly constructed annex, Young County officials are looking to renovate some of the offices in the courthouse.

One of the offices that will be renovated is the former tax assessor-collector’s office, which will be turned into the new auditor’s office. However, the project will be on hold for a while longer due to a lack of bids received for the work.

Rotary Duck Derby takes off in October

For a seventh year, 10,000 rubber ducks will make the journey from the Firemen’s Park pond to Salt Creek during the Rotary Club of Graham’s Duck Derby. With prizes, food, games and more, the event is looking to provide entertainment for all.

The free event will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at Firemen’s Park, but rubber duck sales opened online last week at duckrace.com/graham. A total of 10,000 rubber ducks will be dumped and raced, with a first place grand prize of $5,000, a second place prize of $500, a third place prize of $100 and a $250 prize for dead duck last.

Graham Concert Association kicking off 79th season next month

With the launch of its upcoming season, Graham Concert Association will continue its almost 80-year tradition of providing music entertainment for the area.

The nonprofit organization started in 1944 with the mission of providing an outlet for the Graham and Young County community to enjoy performing arts locally and will continue that mission with the launch of its 79th season Tuesday, Sept. 17.

From backyard to pro: Mairena reaches cornhole’s highest level

Three years ago, Oscar Mairena picked up the evolving sport of cornhole as a fun hobby, something he could play in the backyard with friends and family.

He soon joined his relatives’ cornhole group, the Ragin Cajuns, and it wasn’t long before the relaxing game involving tossing bean bags at wooden boards with holes in them became a fixture in his life.

GISD tasked with balancing budget before adoption

With a goal of balancing the budget before final adoption, the Graham ISD Board of Trustees last week adopted a proposed deficit budget and a lowered tax rate.

With anticipated revenues on the way, the board adopted the proposed deficit budget with a request to amend the budget to be balanced with those added revenues. 

The proposed budget has $27,507,785 in revenues and $28,865,210 in expenditures, or a difference of $1,357,425. Expenses increased $1,385,325 in the general fund, $72,130 in the athletic fund and $71,970 in the food service fund.

Navarez-Cantu indicted on child porn charges

After being arrested in January on five counts of possession or promotion of child pornography, Austin Lasatt Navarez-Cantu was indicted in July on those charges. 

Navarez-Cantu, 27, was indicted by a Young County grand jury in July for all five charges which occurred on or around Aug. 24, 2023. The indictments state he did possess with intent to promote visual material that depicted a child younger than 18 years of age engaging in sexual conduct.

Two indicted on Olney aggravated assault

Two suspects arrested in June and extradited back to the state following an alleged assault which occurred in Olney in May, were indicted in July on those charges.

Patrick Rater, 32, and Summer Krick, 22, both of Olney, have remained in the Young County Jail since being arrested Saturday, June 8 on the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The two were indicted by a Young County grand jury in July.
