Young County Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots is gearing up to begin its 2021 campaign to bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to Young County’s less fortunate children. Campaign Coordinator Dave Reid spoke to the Graham Noon Lion’s Club and announced the program will partner with the club’s Angel Tree Project.
The Rotary Club of Graham and their 10,000 rubber ducks made their way to Fireman’s Park Saturday afternoon for the Duck Derby. For the first time in four years since the rubber duck race fundraiser began the course had a flowing stream to push the ducks along, which ended at Salt Creek.
Each year, Graham Fire Department and its auxiliary hosts a T-shirt fundraiser raising money and awareness for those in area affected by breast cancer. The funding raised will help organizations who provide mammograms, treatments and those who provide transportation for those who require treatment.
The Graham Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees voted Thursday to adopt a new tax effective tax rate and budget for the fiscal year 2022. Following a unanimous vote, the adopted tax rate for FY 2022 is $0.339400 per $100 valuation which begins Friday, Oct. 1.
The approved rate is the No-New-Revenue Rate as figured by the Young Central Appraisal District. This rate will raise the same amount of property tax revenue for the hospital in both the 2020 and 2021 tax years.
The deadline to register to vote in the November Constitutional Amendment Election is approaching at the beginning of October. There are eight constitutional amendments which will appear on the ballot in Young County, but no other local ballot issues.
Frederick Datcher, Jr., 19, was arrested Thursday night following a vehicle pursuit which began in Young County and ended in Archer County by the Young County Sheriff’s Office. No damages or injuries were reported in the pursuit, according to YCSO Sheriff Travis Babcock.
The annual Fall Clean Up event hosted by the city of Graham will kick off this Saturday at the city convenience station. The event encourages various clean up methods through use of the city convenience station and through opportunities available during the kickoff event.
On Aug. 14, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southwestern Haiti approximately 75 miles west of the capital Port-au-Prince, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Two days later, Tropical Storm Grace made matters worse on Aug. 16 and 17, after more than 1 million were already exposed to the earthquake, which triggered landslides and a large number of deaths and injuries as well as extensive damage to infrastructure.
The Young County Commissioner’s Court Monday voted for a 12% tax increase following its required public hearing. The 2021-2022 tax rate of $0.693585 per $100 valuation was approved by a 4-1 vote.
Friends and family gathered Saturday night at Sonic to remember the life of Klowie Moore on the one-year anniversary of her murder.
Sonic has become a spot of remembrance for Moore’s loved with a memorial banner that hangs from the front of the building and painted windows. It is where Moore worked and had several close relationships with friends and co-workers. Moore’s mother, Debbie said the family plans to keep holding memorials at the location on Klowie’s Dec. 28 birthday as well as every Sept. 11. She would have turned 21 this year.
