Lady Blues kick off regular season with a win over Burkburnett

The Lady Blues started their volleyball season off in style, defeating the Burkburnett Lady Bulldogs in a five set thriller. 

The team traveled Tuesday, Aug. 12 to Burkburnett full of anticipation. However, things did not get off to the start the team would have wanted. 

The Lady Bulldogs took the early advantage in this one, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-19 respectively.

Graham tennis comes up short against Peaster

After a short break in their schedule, Graham’s varsity tennis teams couldn’t get the job done against Peaster, losing on the day 15-4 and bringing their record to 3-2 on the new season. 

Despite the loss, this isn’t something that is causing head coach Matt Birdwell, or anyone on the tennis roster to panic. Birdwell acknowledged going into the day the reputation that Peaster held and that Graham had a big test against them.

Lady Blues prep for season with volleyball scrimmages

The Graham Lady Blues volleyball teams participated this past weekend in a series of volleyball scrimmages in preparation for the start of the regular season. 

Graham’s volleyball teams participated in these scrimmages Friday and Saturday, Aug. 8-9, At Graham high school against a variety of opponents. On both days, Graham’s varsity and junior varsity teams played in the main gym while the freshman team played in the old gym. 

On day one, Graham saw neighboring schools like Jacksboro, Memorial and Nocona all make the trip over for some developmental play.

Newcastle ushers in new school year with annual booster bash

The 2025-26 academic year for Newcastle ISD kicked off this week and the school decided to usher in the new year in style with their annual booster bash event. 

This event called “Meet the Bobcats and Ladycats” took place Thursday, Aug. 7 on a cool and breezy summer evening. 

Parents and fans in the Newcastle community came out to support their local sports teams over at the high school football field, where student athletes from the football, volleyball, cross country and cheerleading teams were introduced and showcased.

Steers, Bobcats kick off regular season with two-a-days

Fall sports are officially kicking into gear for both Graham and Newcastle. Both schools volleyball teams started practicing and had their first scrimmages this weekend. 

Graham tennis kicked off their regular season matches, and both football programs started official two-a-day practices. 

Both the Graham Steers and Newcastle Bobcats kicked off their first football practices Monday, Aug. 4, with Graham holding sessions from the mornings into the afternoon and Newcastle holding evening sessions.

Graham bounces back with wins against Decatur, Stephenville

After a mixed opening weekend where Graham tennis went 1-1 against Mineral Wells and Krum, the Steers and Lady Blues bounced back in a big way picking up wins against Decatur and Stephenville. 

For head coach Matt Birdwell, he particularly highlighted the meet against Decatur as an important one early in the season, being how they performed last year. 

The team lost to Decatur narrowly on the road last season 10-9, so Graham was looking for a bounce back performance this go around.

Graham kicking off fall sports with booster bash

The summer offseason has come and gone for Graham athletics and fall sports season is in full swing. Graham High School will kick off the start of the new season and year with their annual booster bash event. 

The Graham Athletic Booster Club Facebook page announced the event in a post Sunday, Aug. 3. The page said that gates would be open at Newton Field for the event at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11.

Athletes from all the fall sports teams as well as school clubs will be featured and presented for the community in Graham.

Graham tennis opens season against Mineral Wells, Krum

The Steers and Lady Blues tennis teams were the first to open regular season action with matches against Mineral Wells and Krum this past weekend. 

This weekend saw ups and downs for the varsity teams but also signs of growth. 

From the jump Friday, Aug. 1, things got off to a bit of an unexpected start for the teams in Graham. While the meet with Mineral Wells was supposed to begin at 9 a.m. mother nature had other plans in the form of an hour rain delay.

Lady Blues, Ladycats start regular seasons with two-a-day practices

After months of anticipation and offseason programs the weight is finally over, the regular season for volleyball has come once again as Graham and Newcastle athletes kicked things off with their two-a-day practices. 

For the Lady Blues, they really got off to the races wasting no time getting in the gym with their first ever midnight madness practice.

Steers, Bobcats look ahead to upcoming scrimmages

It’s an exciting time of year for area football as the Graham Steers and Newcastle Bobcats began their two-a-day practices for regular season play this week. 

However, a key test of ability for both teams will be how they fare in their scrimmage matches. 

For the Steers, those matchups will be against Grandview and Godley while the Bobcats will be taking on Saint Jo and Baird.
