Lady Blues lose early lead; fall at home to Lady Eagles

Despite holding an early lead, the Lady Blues were unable to sustain their momentum for the final three quarters in Tuesday’s 46-37 loss against Decatur Tuesday at Graham High School gym.

The Lady Blues gave Decatur (8-3) everything it could handle for all four stanzas and even made it a seven-point game late but turnovers continue to be a problem early on for the team.

Graham was able to keep the Lady Eagles’ talented offense at bay early on thanks to a strong defensive effort. Decatur was held to a season-low four points in the first quarter.

GHS Steers stampede past Bridgeport Bulls

If Tuesday night is any indication, the Graham Steers varsity boys basketball team has the makings of a special season.

The Steers dominated in all areas of the game on their way to a 69-38 thrashing of the Bridgeport Bulls on the road.

With the victory, Graham remains undefeated in the young season at 3-0. It was the first time in three games in which head coach, Marcus Morris, had the luxury of a full roster after the football playoffs ended last Friday.

Miscues, turnovers haunt Lady Blues in road loss Tuesday

Winning on the road is never easy. Winning on the road against a top-10 team presents its own challenge.

The Lady Blues committed 24 turnovers in large part due to the Bridgeport full-court press last  Tuesday in a 64-39 loss at Bridgeport High School gymnasium.

The Sisses, currently ranked No. 6 in Class 4A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, had little trouble getting to the basket.

Bridgeport begins the season with a record of 9-1 following the win and has already posted wins over two Class 6A schools and a pair of victories over Class 5A schools.

Steers end season in area round

The young 2018 Graham Steers saw their fine season end Friday night in the area round to Lubbock Estacado 46-30 at Abilene Christian University. The Steers led 21-20 at halftime but were unable to stop the speed of the Matadors in the second half.

Graham concludes its season with a 8-4 overall.

Tough ending to a storybook season for Bryson

Making a trip to the state tournament in any sport is never easy.

Bryson, which was making their first-ever appearance in the Texas UIL state championships in any sport, got behind in each of the three sets and never could sustain any offensive rhythm.

Third-ranked Neches eliminated the Lady Cowgirls in straight sets 25-14, 25-13, 25-15 at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland Wednesday afternoon in a Class 1A state semifinal. There was no shame in that for sure. The Lady Tigers’ (40-4) three of four losses had come against Class 4A schools.

Trester signs with Vernon College

Graham senior Tatum Trester signed to play softball for Vernon College on Friday, Nov. 9 inside the Graham High School library.

She went on several visits to various campuses, but there was something about the Vernon community that felt right.

“I liked Vernon because the town is a lot like Graham,” Trester said. “It has that small feel to the community where you have that special bond with your players at a small college. I really like how the coach there has welcomed me and made it an easy choice for me.”

Freshman, JV teams win in finale

Both the Graham freshman and junior varsity football teams concluded their season last week with wins at Newton Field.

The freshman team defeated Stephenville by a final score of 26-21. Trey Alverez played a major role in the victory. The freshman scored on a touchdown, a two-point conversion and provided an interception which helped lead the Steers to a win.

Midway through the second quarter, Brodie Bates scooped up a loose ball for a fumble returned for a score to give Graham a 14-6 lead.

On the ensuing Stephenville possession, Colby Welch...

Bryson volleyball advances to 1A state tournament

It’s becoming quite clear that no team wants to face the Bryson Lady Cowgirls.

The third-ranked Cowgirls breezed past Saint Jo in straight sets 26-24, 25-21, 25-18 Saturday in the Region II-Class 1A regional final at Midlothian High School.

With the victory Bryson advances to their first state tournament in school history.

“From the beginning of the season every one of my players said we didn’t just want to return to regionals, they wanted to make it to state,” said head coach Chelsea Kincaid. “They...

Young Steers win district championship

Winning a district championship is far from easy. Trying to defend your district title from a year ago with almost a completely new roster presents a challenge.

Graham lost 28 seniors off its 14-1 state semifinal team from 2017 while the defense returned just two starters.

Despite those odds, the Graham Steers are back-toback District 3-4A Division II champions following Friday’s 41-12 win over Vernon at Leo Britain Field.
