Bank scam messages reaching Young County

A series of fraudulent text messages have recently been getting sent to bank customers in Graham and Young County.

At least two banks in the area have put out information online about these scam messages in an effort to warn people should they receive one. First State Bank and Graham Savings and Loan published examples of the types of fraudulent messages on their respective Facebook pages.

These texts do not originate from the banks and should be deleted immediately upon reception. The messages are meant to look like official bank communications in an effort to trick customers into falling for the scam.

The message typically shares false information about a recent pending payment or one that was successfully processed. These messages share a link in the text which, if clicked on, would pose a security risk to the customer’s information and accounts.

Issues like this have been occurring nationwide and it is important for bank customers and other individuals to be aware so they don’t fall for one of these scams. The banks encourage customers to regularly check their accounts and transactions to ensure no wrongdoings have happened.

The office of the Texas Comptroller provides fraud and consumer alerts on its website. The department provides resources for reporting suspected fraud at comptroller.texas.gov/fraud-alert/.
