Over 60 contestants in the Texas Cattle Feeders Association region participated in the 2023 Junior Fed Beef Challenge and Caden Joy, of Young County, walked away as Junior Division Overall Champion.

The challenge, featuring participants from third through twelfth grade, was held Friday, July 28 at West Texas A&M University in Canyon. The contest seeks to give youth exposure to the process of feeding cattle and help build the upcoming generation of cattle feeders.

Those in the contest feed a pen of steers, take a written exam and participate in interviews and oral presentations. Their cattleā€™s performance is also factored into the overall score.

Joy was named the Junior Division Overall Champion and received a $350 prize and trophy buckle. He received the first place award for the written exam in the junior division.

Caroline Dudley was named the Senior Division Overall Champion and received a $5,000 scholarship and a trophy buckle. Dudley received the first place award for the written exam and the second place award for her interview in the senior division.

TCFA represents the cattle feeding industry in the regions of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Members of the organization market more than 6 million fed cattle in the multi-billion-dollar industry.
