UPDATED – 5:28 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6

The suspect in Monday's officer-involved shooting was identified Tuesday afternoon by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

John Gabriel Rice, 18, of Graham, was identified as the subject who died in an altercation Monday, Feb. 5 with Graham Police Department officers, according to a DPS release from Tuesday, Feb. 6. The GPD officer who was stabbed in the altercation was discharged from the hospital and is recovering.

GPD received a call around 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5 regarding a suspicious man with a knife on the road near the intersection of Hillcrest and Morado Streets, according to a release from the DPS.

“Officers attempted to make contact with the belligerent suspect, but the suspect attacked and stabbed one of the Graham police officers. Another Graham police officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect,” the release stated. “The 18-year-old suspect was pronounced deceased on the scene.”

GPD K9 Officer David Lipsey was initially transported to Graham Regional Medical Center and then to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

The Young County Serving Our Servants (SOS) organization announced Tuesday that they provided the Lipsey family with $1,000 to soften the economic burden on the officer.

Information regarding the second officer has not been released.

First responders from GPD, YCSO, Graham Fire Rescue, Graham EMS, Olney Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and Texas Game Wardens responded to the scene.

The incident is still under investigation from the Texas Rangers. No further information was available as of Tuesday evening.


STORY UPDATE – 8:27 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5

A Graham Police Department officer is in stable condition following an officer-involved shooting which resulted in the death of a suspect.

GPD received a call around 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5 regarding a suspicious man with a knife on the road near the intersection of Hillcrest and Morado Streets, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The officer was initially transported to Graham Regional Medical Center and then to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. The officer is in stable condition.

Names of officers and suspect involved have not yet been released.

Graham ISD sent a message to parents approximately one hour after the shooting via its resource ParentSquare stating that all campuses were safe.

A Graham Police Department officer-involved shooting resulted in the death of a suspect and an injured officer.

GPD received a call around 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5 regarding an individual in the area of Hillcrest and Morado Streets, according to a joint press release from the city of Graham and Young County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival at the location, GPD officers engaged with the reported individual which resulted in the death of the individual and an injury to one officer. The officer was transported to Graham Regional Medical Center for evaluation.

Graham ISD sent a message to parents approximately an hour after the shooting via its resource ParentSquare stating that all campuses were safe.

First responders from GPD, YCSO, Graham Fire Rescue, Graham EMS, Olney Police Department, Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and Texas Game Wardens responded to the scene.

The incident is currently under investigation from the Texas Rangers. A request for information from the Texas Rangers was made Monday.

In the joint statement, it was requested that local residents avoid the area while the investigation was underway.
