Norma Lee “Mary” (Porter) Smith

Tue, 05/25/2021 - 9:34 am

Our “Mamaw” peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior and dear ones departed, on Friday, May 21, 2021. Norma Lee “Mary” (Porter) Smith was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Paducah, Texas to the late Van C. Porter and Bunia Vesta Porter. She grew up poor in money but rich in love and spirt. She married Walter “Neal” Smith in 1943. Mary was a beautician for many years and later in life she was famous for baking “Mamaw’s Pies.” An avid Texas Rangers fan who loved to play any family game and always wanted to look her best, even while holding a fishing rod.

Mamaw spent her life devoted to her children, which included her own daughter as well as many other children who graced the arm of her recliner. Mamaw loved to teach her children how to color “in the lines,” sing Primative Baptist hymns and help “get their lessons done.” She was always ready and willing to go anywhere and do anything at the drop of a hat, as long as you gave her time to get dolled up first. Mamaw always had a shoulder to cry on and her couch was a favorite spot for many to find respite and receive words of wisdom.

Mary was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Mary Shirlene Smith, as well as her husband, parents and siblings; Luther Porter, Marie Rekita, Dewey Porter, and Joe Porter.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Wanda Spears; three grandchildren Greg Spears and wife Kathy, Pam Ball and husband Greg, and Mark Spears. Mamaw is also survived by seven Great-Grandchildren; Mallory McCain and husband Zach, Bo Ball, Garrett Spears and wife Kandace, Trevor Ball, Macey Mazy and husband Dillon, Maddie Spears and Trinity Spears; Two Great-Great-Grandchildren, Caroline McCain and William McCain. Great-niece, Lorie Cowser, husband Dean and children Chase, Cara, and Cambrie.

Services will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. in The Chapel of McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home in Graham, Texas. Followed by lunch at Graham First Presbyterian Church. Graveside Services will be at 4 p.m. at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah, Texas. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home.
