GHS soccer teams find mixed results at Hirschi
The Graham Steers and Lady Blues traveled to Wichita Falls to take on the Hirschi Huskies and Lady Huskies, and the teams came home with mixed results in their contests.
The Steers took a loss Monday, Feb. 12 to the Huskies 2-0 with an offense that just couldn’t seem to connect all night. Meanwhile, the Lady Blues exploded for another offensive outburst in their win over the Lady Huskies 10-0.
Here are some details and information regarding each team’s performance in these district matchups.
Steers at Hirschi (L), 2-0
After taking a close loss at home against Wichita Falls Old High just a few days before, the Steers struggled to find the offense again in the loss to Hirschi.
Graham was missing a key piece of their defense and the players struggled to adjust early on. The Steers allowed Husky goals in the 13th and 15th minutes of the game to get down 2-0. But the defense improved, and outside of the two goals, the Steers only allowed three more shots inside the box the rest of the game.
While Hirschi out-possessed Graham most of the game, the Steers did find themselves a number of opportunities on the offensive end. They had multiple shots on goal and came close a few times, but ultimately, they couldn’t get the shots in the net and took the loss.
Graham moved to 1-2 in district and sits in fourth place while Hirschi pulled ahead to 2-1 and second place with a number of games left to play for both teams.
Lady Blues at Hirschi (W), 10-0
Normally, scoring 10 goals in a soccer game would be a once-a-season type of performance for a team. But for the Lady Blues, this offensive outburst was not the first of its kind this year.
After falling short against Old High last week, the Lady Blues came back with a vengeance as they dominated the Lady Huskies.
Three players combined to score all 10 goals for Graham, while the Lady Blues outplayed Hirschi in seemingly every way.
Senior Sophie Schlieper led the team with five goals, half of the team’s total. She received assists on all five of her goals, one from freshman Adi Pinkston, two from junior Camden Thorne, one from freshman Marissa Bueno and one from sophomore Tara Dawson.
Pinkston was second of the three goal-scorers as she put three shots into the net for scores. The freshman received assists from Pettus on two of the goals and took the other one on her own.
Finally, Pettus scored the other two goals for the Lady Blues to round out the 10 total. Pettus received an assist from Dawson on one of them and scored the other one by herself.
Both soccer teams will continue their district schedule with games Monday, Feb. 19 on the road at Burkburnett. The Steers are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. while the Lady Blues will follow afterwards around 7:30 p.m.
