The Graham High School track teams competed in their final meet ahead of this week’s District 6-4A meet at Newton Field. GHS athletes competed Thursday, March 30 at the Stephenville Colonel Mobley Optimist Relays.

GHS Track coach Jim Walton said while there were personal bests recorded in Stephenville he felt there was still room for improvement going into the district meet.

“Honestly, we didn't feel like we were as sharp at Stephenville as we will need to be at district this week,” Walton said. “We did have several season best which was impressive due to the very windy and rainy conditions. All in all, it was a very tough meet both in terms of conditions and competition but it was a good meet to help prepare us for the district meet this week in Graham.”

Stephenville, Glen Rose, Mineral Wells and Brownwood will all be in Graham April 5-6 for the District 6-4A Track and Field Championships. Walton said he expects good competition in the meet.

“On the girls’ side, it looks to be a very close meet for the team title between Stephenville, Graham and Brownwood with Glen Rose having a talented roster as well. The girls’ contest could very well come down to the last race and be separated by a few points. Potentially the closest district meet race that we have been in over the last 20 years,” Walton said. “On the boys' side, Stephenville looks to be the favorite with a very strong team followed by Brownwood and Graham also with strong teams but potentially not as much depth as Stephenville. But you never know at the district meet because one miscue can lead to major point swings in the team standings. There are a lot of outstanding track performers from all the schools in this district and a lot of good programs going against each other so it should be a lot of fun.”
