Speed limits to be reduced on sections of Hwy. 16

Following a public hearing with no speakers, the Graham City Council approved a third and final reading of an ordinance to reduce the speed limit by five miles per hour within certain areas of Hwy. 16.

Graham Police Chief Brent Bullock, Public Works Director Randall Dawson and Texas Department of Public Safety representatives will coordinate the efforts to place the new speed limit signs following council approval Thursday, Feb. 5.

The first two readings of the ordinance amendment were approved at city council meetings held Thursday, Dec. 18 and Thursday, Jan. 8.

Young County approves tax abatement for solar, battery storage project

Following over a year of discussion, the Young County Commissioners Court voted last week to grant a tax abatement for a solar and battery storage project from Titus LCV.

The Tapaderos project from Titus LCV includes a solar power generation facility with capacity generation of approximately 300 MW along with a battery storage component with capacity of 200 MW.

Engineers to provide city wastewater treatment plant update

The city of Graham will soon receive a report and estimated construction costs related to a proposed rehabilitation project of the wastewater treatment plant.

Engineers with Freese and Nichols will be presenting their preliminary design report and option of probable construction cost for the wastewater treatment plant rehabilitation project during the city council meeting Thursday, Feb. 5.

Graham speed limit reduction public hearing Thursday

A previously rescheduled city of Graham public hearing will be held Thursday for proposed speed limit reductions on Hwy. 16.

The public hearing was originally scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22, but canceled due to an anticipated lack of quorum of council members. The public hearing will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 at City Hall located at 608 Elm St.

The city council is considering an ordinance to reduce the existing speed limits along a portion of Hwy. 15 by five miles per hour below the current maximum speed limit.

Graham launches comprehensive plan website

As the city of Graham navigates a plan for the future, it has made its process and findings available to the public through an online resource.

A comprehensive plan is a growth and development plan for the city. The link to the online plan resource is available through the city’s online homepage

The online resource lists the mission and vision of the city as well as information about the plan and when it will be completed.

Early voting opens soon in March primaries

The March primaries are approaching as early voting takes off in a little over two weeks in Young County and throughout the state.

Early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 17-20, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 23-27. 

Early voting locations will be the Young County Annex at 417 Second St. in Graham and Olney Civic Center at 210 S Grand Ave in Olney. The Olney early voting polling location will only be open Feb. 24-27.

The Young County Commissioners Court voted Wednesday to rescind a burn ban that was enacted following a local disaster declaration.

The county commissioners met Wednesday, Jan. 28 after inclement weather conditions caused the meeting to be rescheduled twice. The commissioners voted to rescind the burn ban and watch conditions after the snow and ice melts.

Winter weather causes cancellations, trash service interruptions

Winter weather crossed portions of the state last week and snow and ice remained throughout this week as temperatures continued to stay below freezing.

Roads were iced over for the majority of the week, as motorists attempted to make the trek around both the city and county. 

The Young County Sheriff’s Office, Graham Police Department and volunteer fire departments assisted trapped vehicles and responded to incidents throughout the winter weather.

Teaching the next generation: NCTC undergoing first year of LVN to RN program

After being implemented last year, the North Central Texas College Licensed Vocational Nurse to Registered Nurse transition program has seen support and interest to establish the next generation of nurses.

The Graham campus is in the middle of its first LVN to RN transition program. The local program was made possible through years of community support and requests, with many lined up to take the program right at launch from the Graham area.
