The district, with its Facilities Planning Committee, are planning for the future of the district’s facilities.

GISD plans for future with facility assessment

The Graham ISD Board of Trustees heard results of a facility assessment and will be receiving additional reports as they continue to plan for the future of each facility in the district.

The GISD Board of Trustees met Oct. 8, 2025 and approved forming an over 50-member Facility Planning Committee appointed by the board and campus and district administrators to develop a five-year district Long-Range Facility Plan.

GEIC considering funding $1.2 million for T&S Manufacturing, Inc. facility

A $1.2 million project is being proposed by the Graham Economic Improvement Corporation to incentivize the repurpose and expansion of an existing facility for T&S Manufacturing, Inc. 

T&S is based in Jermyn and provides livestock feeders and agricultural equipment to customers across the state, most notably through their Trip Hopper Range Feeders.

Voter registration deadline approaching for March election

Election season is on the horizon in Young County as the Republican and Democratic primaries have early voting kicking off next month.

Those who wish to vote in the Republican and Democratic primaries have less than two weeks left to register to vote in Young County, with the last day to register being Monday, Feb. 2. The last day to apply for a ballot by mail is Friday, Feb. 20.

To register, a voter can complete a registration application and return it to the Young County election office at the Young County Annex at 417 Second St.

A public hearing for proposed speed limit reductions on Hwy. 16 by the Texas Department of Transportation has been moved to February.

The Graham City Council meeting scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22 was canceled due to an anticipated lack of quorum of council members. That public hearing is now scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 at City Hall located at 608 Elm St.

The city council is considering an ordinance to reduce the existing speed limits along a portion of Hwy. 15 by five miles per hour below the current maximum speed limit.

Calhoun matches with Rice University through QuestBridge

Dec. 1, 2025, marked a life-changing moment for Graham High School senior Ryder Calhoun. 

It was QuestBridge Match Day—a highly anticipated announcement for seniors across the country—and Ryder’s results were everything he had hoped for. 

When he arrived home from school, he opened his laptop to check the decision. There it was: he had matched with his dream school, Rice University.

Hemby hired as new NISD superintendent

After being named the lone finalist in December, Missy Hemby was officially named the new superintendent of Newcastle ISD.

During a special meeting of the school board Thursday, Dec. 18, Hemby was named the lone finalist for superintendent and made the position official during a meeting Thursday, Jan. 8, where she signed her contract for the position.

Hemby said it means a lot that the school board put faith in her to do what is best for the future of the district.

County to vote on solar, battery storage abatement Monday

After over a year of discussion, the Young County Commissioners Court will consider granting a tax abatement for a solar and battery storage project next week.

The Tapaderos project from Titus LCV includes a solar power generation facility with capacity generation of approximately 300 MW along with a battery storage component with capacity of 200 MW.

Candidate filing period opens for May election

The filling period has opened for candidates seeking to run for Young County seats up for election in May. 

The filing period opened Wednesday, Jan. 14 and will run through Friday, Feb. 13. The last day to file a declaration of write-in candidacy will be Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Candidate applications can be obtained and submitted for the May election from each separate county entity. Each entity has until Feb. 13 to order a general election or special election on a measure, such as a bond election.

Commissioners approve reinvestment zone for solar, battery storage project

Following a public hearing Monday, the Young County Commissioners Court approved a reinvestment zone designation as a step towards a potential tax abatement for a solar and battery storage project.

Young County is in discussions with Titus LCV regarding a tax abatement for the project seven miles west of Eliasville. An abatement is the full or partial exemption of taxes of certain property in a reinvestment zone designated by the county for economic development purposes.

Licea indicted, charges enhanced

A Young County grand jury indicted Derek Licea this week on charges of indecency with a child and possession of child pornography. 

Licea, 33, of Comanche County, was arrested in October 2025 by the Brownwood Police Department on a Young County warrant for a charge of indecency with a child. 

After an investigation from Graham Police Department, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies, Licea was additionally charged with possession of child pornography – less than 10 visual depictions.
