City streets department gears up for 2024 projects

With the majority of proposed projects completed for the 2023 year, the city of Graham Streets Department has a full list of planned repaving projects scheduled for 2024 across the city.

Some of the highlights of projects finished in 2023 include the entirety of Pioneer Cemetery, Indiana Street from Hillcrest Drive to Fourth Street and Carolina Street from Hillcrest Drive to the roundabout.

Graham man arrested on child porn charges

A Graham man was arrested last week on five counts of possession or promotion of child pornography. The arrest was related to an offense from August 2023.

Austin Lasatt Cantu-Navarez, 26, of Graham, was arrested Friday, Jan. 5 and booked into the Young County Jail.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Cantu-Navarez was arrested for promoting visual material electronically that depicted a child who was younger than 18 years of age, at the time the image was made, engaging in sexual conduct. The offense occurred from 4:56-5:39 a.m. Aug. 24, 2023.

New bond set for Jack County man with charges in three counties

A Jack County man, who was indicted in August 2023 on a charge of aggravated assault related to a March 2023 offense, was rearrested this week after being arrested in Frisco and violating his bond conditions.

Jeffrey Charles Hilliard, 42, was originally arrested in June 2023 on charges totaling $490,000 from Young and Jack counties.

TxDOT completes redesign of Elm, Cherry Streets

A redesign of the intersection of Elm and Cherry Street was completed this week from the Texas Department of Transportation which will alter traffic patterns at the location.

Following approval from the Transportation Improvements Committee in September 2023 and the Graham City Council in October 2023, the project by TxDOT was started and completed Wednesday, Jan. 10.

At the end of September the Transportation Improvements Committee discussed and approved a recommendation for a potential redesign of the intersection.

Restoring American Legion Post 34

Two local veterans are making an effort to preserve the history and legacy of the American Legion Post 34 in Graham. The two are searching for new members in order to keep the post active.

The American Legion is the largest veterans service organization in the United States. The mission of the organization is to enhance the well-being of America’s veterans, its families, its military and its communities through the devotion to mutual helpfulness.

County bridge historical designation creates TxDOT hurdle

The Young County Commissioners Court was recently made aware of the historical component of the County Road 237 bridge at the Clear Fork of the Brazos River.

At the commissioners meeting Monday, Dec. 26, it was brought to the attention of the court that the CR 237 bridge had historical significance and that would affect the ability of the county to repair or replace that bridge.

Construction starting this month on new Firemen’s Park features

Construction on features of the new Firemen’s Park playground and dog park will proceed this month as announced last week by the Graham Parks Department Board of Directors.

After getting a notice to proceed from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department the city can now move forward with the projects.

During the Tuesday, Dec. 12 parks meeting Jacob & Martin Project Manager Tristan King gave a timeline for completion of the playground and dog park additions.

5-year-old injured on new Firemen's Park playground

An accident last week at Firemen’s Park sent a 5-year-old Throckmorton girl to the hospital, after her fingers were caught in a new piece of playground equipment.

Local first responders were dispatched to Firemen’s Park shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, following a report of a child having her fingers trapped in a piece of playground equipment.

When officers from Graham Police Department arrived at the park, they observed a crowd of people around the “merry-go-round,” as well as an off-duty Graham EMS employee, who was attempting to calm the child.

Taking the stage: GRT announces 2024 season

The nonprofit theater group Graham Regional Theatre is getting ready to take the stage again for a new season beginning in February.

GRT board members Katie Huitt and Kay Berru said this year the theater group will continue to invite all those interested in the community and welcome them with open arms. The goal for the group this year is to bring more people to the local theater.
