YCSO signs agreement granting ICE authority to officers

The Young County Sheriff’s Office signed an agreement with ICE which will provide training and authority to its deputies as immigration officers.

Texas Senate Bill 8 was passed June 20, 2025 and effective Jan. 1, 2026 and implemented requirements for sheriffs to comply with the Delegation of Immigration Authority Section 287(g) Immigration and Nationality Act.

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) Early voting will take off Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Young County and run through Friday, Feb. 27 in Young County. There are two voting locations for early voting, with Young County voters able to vote at either location.

Early voting begins Tuesday in March primary election

Early voting in the March primaries begins Tuesday, with multiple contested Young County seats on the ballot.

Early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 17-20, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 23-27. 

Early voting locations will be the Young County Annex at 417 Second St. in Graham and Olney Civic Center at 210 S Grand Ave in Olney. The Olney early voting polling location will only be open Feb. 24-27.

Election day voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 3.

Possible explosive device located at Gateway Inn, developing story

UPDATE 1:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13: A device was removed and properly disposed. Based on what was discovered on scene, Graham Police Department is opening a formal investigation into the device, according to City Manager Eric Garretty.

Community mourns loss of local teacher: Students, staff remember impact of Michelle Lowrey

A passion for students and a love of teaching for over 20 years will be remembered with the passing of Graham High School teacher Michelle Lowrey. 

Lowrey died Sunday, Feb. 8 and a celebration of her life was held Friday, Feb. 13 at the GHS gymnasium, with staff and students encouraged to wear Graham colors.

Graham ISD collected stories, quotes and memories from students, parents and alumni as a keepsake for her sons.

Engineers present wastewater treatment plant rehabilitation costs

As the Graham City Council looks to start its budget planning process next week, it will have to consider potential debt options for rehabilitation projects at the wastewater treatment plant.

Nick Landes and John Lopez of Freese and Nichols presented a preliminary design report and option of probable construction costs for the wastewater treatment plant rehabilitation project during the city council meeting Thursday, Feb. 5.

City sets preliminary budget planning calendar

The Graham City Council will soon begin its upcoming fiscal year budget planning process with decisions on debt issuance and utility rate increases under consideration.

City Manager Eric Garretty presented a preliminary budget planning calendar Thursday, Feb. 5 with key dates from February through September where the city will take action and host public hearings related to the budget and tax rate.

County enacts burn ban

The Young County Commissioners Court voted Monday to enact a burn ban that will run through May unless terminated earlier by the court. 

The court ordered a burn ban Monday, Feb. 9 and all outdoor burning in the county is prohibited from the date of the order. 

A violation of the order is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $500.

Spivey Hill Challenge raises $20,000 for local nonprofits

With over $100,000 donated to local and international charities since 2015, the Spivey Hill Challenge continued its charitable efforts with $20,000 presented to two local organizations.

The Spivey Hill Challenge board presented two $10,000 checks Wednesday, Feb. 4 to the local organizations Hero House and Garments of Grace. Funds were raised during the 11th annual race held Nov. 8, 2025 at Firemen’s Park in Graham.

From dream to reality: Burkett opens Olivet & Oak downtown

It was a culinary interest and dream of Eleanor Burkett to have her own bakery and marketplace and that dream has become a reality with the launch of Olivet & Oak in downtown Graham.

Baking has been a part of Burkett’s life stretching back to her roots in Graham. She attended a culinary school in Pasadena, California and jumped into the career working with a close friend in Santa Barbara County in Los Olivos.

That first job out of culinary school was on Olivet which features a number of farm and fresh options.
