Texas Local Media stays under longtime leadership

Texas Local Media’s network of 32 community newspapers remains under longtime Texas-based leadership following a recent ownership transition, with senior leaders emphasizing continuity in local operations across the state.

The company, formerly known as Moser Community Media, includes weekly and small daily newspapers serving communities throughout Texas. It has built its footprint over decades of local reporting and community engagement.

County law enforcement creating multi-agency task force for Flock cameras

Graham Police Department, the Young County Sheriff’s Office and Olney Police Department will be creating a multi-agency task force to share information from Flock Safety cameras.

The Graham City Council approved GPD Chief Brent Bullock to enter into the agreement during their meeting Thursday, April 30.

No action taken on change for city council meeting time, date

With no action from the Graham City Council to change the date or time it holds its meetings, with the exception of budget workshops and town halls, the meeting time will continue Thursday mornings.

Meetings for the city council are held every two weeks at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Graham Convention and Visitors Bureau meeting room at 608 Elm St.

Area meeting to be held on New World Screwworm

Those in Young County and surrounding areas have another opportunity to learn more about the New World Screwworm threat and measures they can take if the threat reaches the United States.

Texas Farm Bureau District 3 Director Greg Buenger will be hosting a meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, May 11 at North Central Texas College in Graham to provide a status update on New World Screwworm (NWS).

Buenger hosted a meeting last year in June and will be providing an update for Young County and the surrounding area. His farm bureau district is 17 counties, including Young and Jack counties.

Unofficial election results released

Unofficial election results were released for local entities in Young County, with contested elections on the ballot for Graham Hospital District, city of Olney and Olney ISD and Newcastle ISD.

Early voting in the May election was held from April 20-28, with no voting held on Tuesday, April 21 for San Jacinto Day. Early voting had a total turnout of 670 voters, or 5.3% of all registered Young County voters.

The candidate filing period was open from Wednesday, Jan. 14 through Friday, Feb. 13. The last day to file a declaration of write-in candidacy was Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The Graham Parks Department Board of Directors approved a recommendation to the Graham City Council for a facility that will include a basketball court and three pickleball courts.

Lincoln Park project moves to city council for approval

The Lincoln Park project is moving forward to the Graham City Council after approval from the Graham Park Department Board of Directors.

One of the top priorities for the parks board is to have a small park concept situated in the northern part of the city between Hwy. 380 N, Lincoln Street and Cherry Street.

The proposed new park would include a basketball court, three pickleball courts, a shaded seating area, handicap parking and other features.

The positions of Young County Judge and Precinct 4 Commissioner are up for election in the Republican runoff.

Runoff election early voting soon

Two candidates for Young County Judge and Precinct 4 Commissioner are heading to the runoff election which has early voting beginning in a little over two weeks. 

The runoff election will be held Tuesday, May 26, with early voting being held from May 18-22. The winners of that runoff election will be that party’s nominee in the upcoming general election Tuesday, Nov. 3.

This is the second year for the program in Young County which brings students and volunteers together to honor military service members.

Students, community support Marines with care packages

For a second year, active duty Marines overseas will be receiving support through care packages from local students and volunteers.

A total of 14 boxes will be sent containing 265 goodie bags and envelopes that include two hand-written letters and two hand-drawn pictures. Special envelopes and letters were made for each stations’ commanding officer or first sergeant.

Voters in Young County and across the state have two final opportunities to cast their ballots for local offices during the last day of early voting today and election day Saturday.

Early voting in the May election was held from April 20-28, with no voting held on Tuesday, April 21 for San Jacinto Day. The first week of early voting had a 3.4% total turnout, or 434 voters at the polls, according to the Young County Elections Department.
