White hearing scheduled for October

A Travis County District Court hearing is upcoming at the beginning of October to determine if Kendrex White could be released from a forensic mental health facility. 

The hearing with the 427th Criminal District Court is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center in Austin. White and his attorneys are seeking to move his status from an inpatient to an outpatient commitment.

County, city to partner on WPJ cemetery following survey

Young County and the city of Graham signed an interlocal agreement following the discovery of potential unmarked graves under a parking lot at the Oak Grove Colored - William P. Johnston Cemetery.

The county-owned cemetery is located on the U.S. 380 bypass and the western property adjacent to the cemetery where the parking lot is located is owned by the city of Graham.

Downtown Development District board dissolved

The Downtown Development District 1 committee was dissolved by Graham City Council this week due to project funding challenges and the direction of the board.

The city council spoke regarding the disestablishment of the committee Thursday, Sept. 11 with City Manager Eric Garretty stating the group was originally meant for oversight and management of grants to improve the downtown area.

City opens community survey

As part of a grant requirement from the Texas General Land Office, the city of Graham is surveying the community regarding its services as a step to create a comprehensive plan.

The city received a grant from the Texas General Land Office to engage in planning activities under the Resilient Communities Program.

The program promotes the development, adoption and implementation of modern and resilient building codes and flood damage presentation ordinances to ensure structures in the community can withstand future hazards.

One journey ends, another begins: Land resigning as district clerk

A decade of Young County service will come to a close Friday as District Clerk Jamie Land resigns from her position. Her skills will now be used to assist courts across the state with the Office of Court Administration.

Land was born and raised in Graham and has family stretching across the county. 

Before running for office, she was a legal assistant for a local law office for 18 years. For four of those years, she served as a county court coordinator.

City taking next step on lead service line inventory

A capital project of up to $600,000 for a lead service line inventory is moving forward after discussion from the Graham City Council this week.

The cost and scope of work for a lead service line inventory was presented to the city of Graham by its contracted engineering firm Jacob and Martin as the city works to remedy a violation from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

County looks for public feedback on future of gazebo

The Young County Commissioners Court provided an update on the construction of a new courthouse gazebo at their latest meeting. 

This discussion Monday, Sept. 8 was following up on the bids the court previously received for the construction of a new gazebo.  

The court received bids for the gazebo at their meeting Monday, Aug. 25, where they were initially hesitant to move forward as all of the proposed bids were over the county's budget for a new gazebo.

City, TPWD working to clear wild hog from residential area

The city of Graham is working with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to find and remove a wild hog that has been seen in the residential area near Pine Tree Road and Westwood Drive.

For the past two weeks, the city’s animal control and Graham Police Department have worked with TPWD to respond to reports of a single wild hog seen multiple times in the residential area.

Sirens and slides: Kickball game seeks to connect law enforcement, community

Young County’s first responders will face off, build morale and connect with the community during an inaugural kickball game this weekend in Graham.

The kickball game will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at the little league softball field next to Firemen’s Park in Graham, with free public attendance. All Young County first responders have been invited to participate in the event.
