Campbell Farm & Ranch receives accolades for success

For over 20 years, Campbell Farm & Ranch has been doing business selling rural real estate in the area and that work was recently recognized.

Headquartered in Graham, the company has sold properties in Young, Throckmorton, Stephens, Jack, Archer, Shackelford, Haskell, Knox, Baylor, Palo Pinto, Eastland, Erath, Foard and Stonewall counties.

The website Land.com celebrates the top land real estate firms and brokers and owner Boone Campbell and his team at Campbell Farm & Ranch were recognized with four awards in April for the southwest region.

Bond set for Hance in overturned 2019 case

After being convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child in 2019, having a 50-year sentence reversed and a new trial ordered, Jimmie Hance had his bond set and remains in the Young County Jail.

The Second Court of Appeals, for a second time, reversed the 50-year sentence of Jimmie Hance and ordered a new trial. 

An opinion issued Thursday, Feb. 27 by the appeals court reversed the original judgment for Hance and remanded the case back to the 90th Judicial District Court for a new trial.

Following noncompliance, city working to establish lead service line inventory

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the city of Graham to send notice to residents this week regarding noncompliance with a lead service line inventory requirement in place from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The notice states that the city violated a drinking water requirement and what the city was doing to correct the action.

Area meeting to be held on New World Screwworm threat

Those in Young County and surrounding areas have the opportunity to learn more about the looming New World Screwworm threat and measures they can take if the threat reaches the United States.

Texas Farm Bureau District 3 Director Greg Buenger will be hosting a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, June 23 at North Central Texas College in Graham to provide a status update on the New World Screwworm (NWS), biology and prevention and treatment strategies.

Free life jacket event this weekend

After the Family Fun and Fishing event was postponed in April, families will have another opportunity this weekend to receive a free fitted life jacket.

The Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety organization will be distributing free life jackets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at The Rock at 300 Elm St. in Graham.

The organization hosts the Family Fun and Fishing event each year and seeks to spread the message of water safety and provide life jackets for all children.

Graham disinfecting water system next week

The city of Graham will be performing its annual required disinfecting process of the water transmission and distribution system starting next week and running through mid-July.

During the process, the city will temporarily convert the disinfectant used in the water distribution system from chloramine to free chlorine. The change will begin Wednesday, June 25 and will continue through Wednesday, July 16.

“During this period, you may experience taste and odor changes associated with this type of temporary disinfectant conversion,” the city said in its public notice.

Fort Belknap finds roots through metal detecting

Fort Belknap is already seeing results from its newest policy allowing metal detecting at the historic site. 

Multiple novelty artifacts were recovered on the fort’s grounds as a result of enthusiasts. 

These discoveries were exciting to fort director Jim Hammond, who was present at the commissioners court meeting Monday, June 9, to tell the court about the earliest findings. 

“I know it might look like scrap to you all, but it really paints a detailed picture,” Hammond said.

Henrietta teen dies in Hwy. 251 vehicle wreck

A Henrietta teen died in a two-vehicle wreck Friday south of Olney on Hwy. 251 in Young County.

The wreck occurred in the morning Friday, June 13 approximately 7.5 miles south of Olney, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A 17-year-old female passenger died in the vehicle wreck due to the injuries sustained in the crash. She was pronounced dead after being transferred to Olney Hamilton Hospital.

The final link in the chain: After 49 years, Cynthia Langford connects with a father

This week, Cynthia Re’nee Starks received a birthday surprise of a lifetime when she was able to officially have a father for the first time in the 49 years of her life.

Cynthia, or Cindy, celebrated her 49th birthday Wednesday, June 11 at the Young County Courthouse when her name was officially changed from Starks to Langford. The change was made a secret by her parents Robert and Carlotta Langford.

But that’s not where this story begins. It all started with Cindy’s birth June 11, 1976.

County hires consultant for potential solar tax abatement

The Young County Commissioners Court took the next step in their process for the Tapaderos solar farm project by hiring a consultant to discuss and potentially negotiate a tax abatement for the project. 

The county hired Jeff G. Snowden of Capex Consulting Group. Snowden was in attendance digitally at last week's commissioners court meeting Monday, June 2, discussing the potential of an abatement for the solar farm project.
