Hance accepts plea of 40 years in prison

Following a Second Court of Appeals reversal of a 2019 conviction for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 6 years old, Jimmie Hance III accepted a plea agreement of 40 years in prison. 

A plea negotiation hearing was held Tuesday, June 24 where Hance accepted the plea after discussions with his attorney Tim Ford and 90th Judicial Assistant District Attorney Jamie Petruzzi.

GEIC approves incentive agreement for new housing

Following a public hearing, the Graham Economic Improvement Corporation approved an up to $200,000 incentive agreement with Cheldan Homes, LP, for new housing in Graham.

GEIC Executive Director Melinda Brown was approved Wednesday, June 25 to negotiate and conclude an incentive agreement with Cheldan Homes, LP, in support of the acquisition of property for new housing opportunities to support workforce retention and expansion.

Feeding a need: Our Daily Bread free meals begin next month

Our Daily Bread will begin the second week of July at First United Methodist Church serving hot lunches and take-home meals for all in the community.

The 14th annual program will be held at 11:30 a.m. weekdays starting Monday, July 7 and running through Friday, Aug. 8 at the FUMC McCree Hall.  

Transportation will be provided by FUMC if scheduled the day before by calling 940-549-0970.

Deadline Monday for requesting additional city garbage polycart

Under the city of Graham’s new garbage contract with KC Dumpsters, only one polycart will be provided unless requested Monday by a city customer.

The city entered into a new contract with KC Dumpsters to provide garbage collection services starting Monday, Sept. 1. KC Dumpsters was one of four proposals submitted to the city, including the former provider Waste Connections.

Celebrate Freedom event this weekend

As the anniversary of America’s independence nears, the city of Graham, for a second year, is gearing up to host a celebration in honor of the big day.

The Graham Chamber of Commerce will host the Celebrate Freedom day of events Saturday, June 28. The celebration begins with a pancake breakfast and ends with the Summer Concert Series and a fireworks show.

The day of events kicks off with the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at First Baptist Church at 620 Fourth St. The breakfast will be $10 per person and be held from 7-11 a.m.

The Graham Leader wins big in TPA Texas Better Newspaper Contest

It was a banner year for The Graham Leader in the Texas Press Association’s Texas Better Newspaper Contest, coming home with nine awards including the top prize – the Division 4 Sweepstakes award.

The awards were announced Saturday, June 21 during the Texas Better Newspaper Contest Awards Banquet at the TPA Convention and Trade Show in Denton. Entries were judged by members of the Kansas Press Association.

Mobile Vet Center returns to Graham Saturday

After making a trip for the Food Truck Championship of Texas, the Mobile Vet Center of Abilene will make another stop in Graham this weekend for the Celebrate Freedom event.

The Mobile Vet Center provides space for confidential counseling of veterans, service members and their families at no cost in a non-medical setting. The truck is used to provide outreach to eligible individuals in communities distant from existing services, such as rural areas.

DSHS holding back-to-school Graham immunization clinic

The Texas Department of State Health Services is hosting a free immunization clinic in Graham next week for those heading back to school or needing up-to-date shots.

The clinic will be held by appointment Tuesday, July 1 at First United Methodist Church at 700 Third St. The clinic will have immunizations for children entering kindergarten, seventh grade or college in the fall.

Parents or guardians over the age of 19 must accompany a minor under the age of 18 to the clinic.

There will be no charge for the immunizations to eligible children and adults.

Smith receives Fulbright award to conduct research in EU

After graduating in 2016 from Graham High School, Sydney Smith has been on a path which has taken her across the globe and her international studies will continue after receiving a Fulbright research award.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards one-year study abroad grants for seniors, recent graduates and graduate students who perform an individually designed study or research project. 

The goal of the Fullbright is to expand the student perspective through academic and professional advancement as well as cross-cultural dialogue.

County discusses potential RV park near Fort Belknap

A potential RV park near Fort Belknap was discussed by the Young County Commissioners Court this week, with the public voicing their concerns regarding the project.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Scott Shook opened the discussion with the commissioners court’s stance on a potential RV park at the fort. 

“As we have purchased the land across the street from the Fort Belknap grounds, the idea had been brought up that we use the hotel occupancy tax money dollars to fund a 14 spot RV space,” Shook said.
