Graham FFA students rake in accolades at state convention

It was a banner year for the Graham FFA program at the Texas FFA Station Convention, with students receiving FFA Lone Star Degrees, top scholarships and state awards.

Graham FFA members Kimber Pratt and Brazier Joy earned their FFA Lone Star Degrees during the Texas FFA Station Convention held Monday, June 30 through Friday, July 4 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. 

The Lone Star FFA Degree is the highest degree bestowed by the Texas FFA. 

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) Members of Virginia’s House accepted a $21,500 check from the Run for the Children board Tuesday, July 1 from proceeds raised from the run and auction. This year’s event celebrated 20 years in Graham, with over $230,000 raised since its establishment.

Record amount raised from Run for the Children for Virginia’s House

The Run for the Children board closed out 20 years of the event in a big way by presenting $21,500 to Virginia's House, the highest amount raised since the event started in Graham.

Run for the Children is a 10K, 5K and 1K Fun Run fundraiser which was held Saturday, April 26 on the Graham downtown square. Sponsor donations, an online auction and registrations for the run were combined for the fundraising donation.

P&Z board recommends rezoning for housing development

Following a public hearing, the Graham Planning and Zoning Commission approved a rezoning recommendation for the city council on Indiana Street as a measure to attract new housing opportunities in Graham.

The city of Graham’s number one priority within its strategic plan is to make residential housing available and affordable. 

As part of those efforts, the P&Z board approved Thursday, June 26 the rezoning of a 7.2-acre lot owned by the Graham Industrial Association from Local Retail to Townhouse.

City looking to add four-way stop at Third, Cherry Street

The Graham City Council took another look at reconfiguring the intersection of Third Street and Cherry Street as a four-way stop, following an initial recommendation from the Graham Police Department.

The city council originally met Thursday, June 5 and were presented a recommendation from City Manager Eric Garretty and GPD Chief Brent Bullock to reconfigure the intersections of Fourth Street and Tennessee Street and of Third Street and Cherry Street.

Beating the odds: Edwards part of first place strongman team

Age has not held back Graham resident Wade Edwards, who has built himself up each year and was part of the winning team for the Liberty Energy Strongman Competition held last month.

Born and raised in Graham, Edwards moved on to work in Schlumberger (SLB) for 16 years and now for Liberty Energy which is headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

“I've always been a gym-goer on and off, dedicated for two years, not dedicated for two years. I got transferred to Shreveport, Louisiana to Liberty Energy yard three and a half years ago,” Edwards said.

City forming options for water service line inventory

Options are being established for presentation to the Graham City Council to comply with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regarding a lead service line inventory.

TCEQ required the city of Graham to send notice to residents last week regarding noncompliance with a lead service line inventory requirement in place from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A growing ministry: Kairos sees growth in John R. Lindsey State Jail

Two Graham residents set a goal in 2023 of establishing the Kairos Prison Ministry program in the John R. Lindsey State Jail in Jacksboro, and that dream became a reality last year. 

The first two Kairos weekends were held at the Jacksboro prison in July 2024 and January 2025 and the third weekend is upcoming in July. The third weekend event will be held Thursday, July 17 through Sunday, July 20.
