NISD students earn UIL state academic accolades

Newcastle ISD brought home UIL academic state championships last week when it competed in the 2023 Academic State Meet. In total, Newcastle High School earned two team state championships, two individual state championships and one silver medal.

The state meet took place May 17-18 at the University of Texas in Austin with competitions in 24 categories. NISD competed in calculator applications, mathematics, number sense, persuasive speaking and informative speaking.

GRMC approves construction bid for new surgery center

The Graham Regional Medical Center Board of Directors chose Teinert Construction as the construction company for the upcoming surgery center and hospital renovations. The decision was finalized after a vote during a Wednesday, May 10 special called meeting.

The bid was approved for a cost of $4,924,000 with the allotted time of 300 days to complete the project.

Summer events approaching: Food Truck Championship of Texas, Possum Pedal, concert in two weeks

Graham’s biggest day of events is two weeks away when the Possum Pedal bike ride, Food Truck Championship of Texas and a concert, featuring Clay Walker and Ian Munsick, are featured around the city.

All three events will take place Saturday, June 3 in Graham.

Summer Reading Program begins in June

The Library of Graham’s annual Summer Reading program begins next month with activities each Wednesday outside the library in Shawnee Park. The program looks to bridge the reading gap which occurs in the summer into the following school year for area children.

The program runs Wednesday, June 7 through Wednesday, July 26. Participants in the program read and record minutes of reading from Monday through Friday each week.

Dulany steps into CVB manager role

This week, Amanda Dulany stepped into the role of manager of the Graham Convention and Visitors Bureau with a goal of bringing new and exciting elements to existing events as well as new experiences to Graham.

Originally from Benbrook, Dulany moved to Graham in 2016 with her family. She graduated from the University of North Texas in 2009 with a Bachelor of Social Work.
Dulany said she is looking forward to the fast-paced nature of the position as well as making connections within the community to work toward a common goal.

Giving Graham a facelift: EDC facade improvement program provides funding for 13 businesses

Graham Assistant City Manager and Economic Development Director Grant Ingram gave an update last week regarding the Facade Improvement Grant, which was offered as a way for businesses to beautify their properties. The $50,000 allotted for the program was used on 13 grants around the city.

In April 2022, the Graham City Council gave the approval for the Graham Economic Improvement Corporation (GEIC) to move forward with the creation and implementation of a Facade grant as a way to assist business owners and help beautify the community.

Graham ISD recognized the accomplishments of students in the district Wednesday, May 10 at Graham High School. Recognitions were given for students’ academic and fine arts achievements during the 2022-2023 school year.
