Emergency supplies Sales Tax Holiday this weekend

A statewide Sales Tax Holiday will be held this weekend for emergency supplies to prepare residents for severe weather such as fires, floods and tornadoes. 

Eligible items can be purchased tax free during the holiday that will be held from Saturday, April 25 through Monday, April 27. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items that can be purchased during the holiday.

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) A Sept. 1, 1996 edition of The Graham Leader where the main story featured Helen Moore pleading guilty to murder. Thirty years after her life sentence, Moore was in the parole process and was denied this week.

Moore denied parole

Helen Moore, who is serving a life sentence for the 1996 murder of Casey Roy Elliott, was denied parole this week.

Thirty years after accepting a plea agreement, Moore–now 71–was put into the parole review process with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at the Dr. Lane Murray Unit in Gatesville.

According to TDCJ, the parole review process begins approximately six months before the parole eligibility date for a first review and four months before the eligibility date for additional reviews.

Early voting begins Monday

Early voting begins Monday for the May local election which has contested races across the county.

On the ballot in May will be local elections for the Graham Hospital District, Newcastle ISD, Olney ISD and the city of Olney. 

Early voting in the May election will run from April 20-28 and election day will be Saturday, May 2. Voting is being held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 20 and April 22-24 and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 27-28.

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) The 20th annual Run for the Children event took off from the Graham downtown square in April 2025 with participants running in the 10K, 5K and Fun Run events. The Run for the Children will take off for its 21st year Saturday, April 25.

Running for a cause: Run for the Children takes off next weekend

For over 20 years Run for the Children has benefited Virginia’s House and Dr. Goodall’s House and that support continues next weekend when the run takes off in Graham.

The run will be held Saturday, April 25 with the start and finish line at Third Street and Oak Street. Start times are 7:30 a.m. for the 10K, 7:35 a.m. for the 5K and 9 a.m. for the 1K Fun Run inside the downtown square.

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) A total of 43 head of cattle were allegedly stolen and sold by Will Tackett, 24, of Jacksboro, who was arrested following an investigation from local law enforcement and the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Rangers.

Young, Archer County cattle rustler arrested

Following an investigation with area law enforcement and the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Rangers, a Jacksboro man was arrested for the theft of 43 head of cattle.

Will Tackett, 24, of Jacksboro was arrested Thursday, April 9 and booked into the Young County Jail on a bond of $15,000 for the charge of theft of livestock and was released the following day.

NCTC dedicates nursing simulation center to Espinoza

Graham Regional Medical Center Chief Clinical Officer Enoc Espinoza will be an inspiration for future generations of nursing students who pass through North Central Texas College after a new facility was dedicated in his honor.

The NCTC Graham campus held an open house and naming celebration Thursday, April 9 for the Licensed Vocational Nurse to Registered Nurse transition program and the new simulation lab at the Health Science Center.

Family Fun and Fishing next weekend

Promoting water safety and teaching children for a lifetime is the goal of the Family Fun and Fishing event which will take off at the end of April at Firemen’s Park in Graham.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25. The event will offer free life jackets for children, safety lessons, games, food, refreshments and activities. The fishing tournament will be open to all children with fishing poles and bait available for free.

GHS prom lights up the night Saturday

A special night for Graham High School juniors and seniors, prom returns this Saturday at the Graham Country Club with new additions and logistics changes.

The masquerade ball prom event is being held from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, April 18 at the country club at 156 Country Club Dr. 

Prom board members organizing the event are Misti Davis, Kasy Robinson, Tiffany Fade, Yessica Palacios and Debbie Langford Hammond, who are getting the word out about traffic flow changes for prom this year.

Memories of home: Lewis reconnects with Young County through art

Artist, teacher and world traveler Benjamin Lewis got his start in Graham and was able to reconnect with his hometown through a commission for an art piece showcasing Young County.

Lewis graduated from Graham High School in 1999 and later attended University of North Texas, Blinn College and Texas State University. He settled down in Brenham where he has been teaching for the past 17 years.

His doodling journey traces back to when he was just a kid drawing in the margins of his paper in school.
