City to apply for grant for reclaimed water storage, filling station

The city of Graham is looking to utilize the reclaimed waterline from Plug Power for a water filling station to reduce water taken from Lake Graham and curb wear on roads from truck traffic.

Plug Power’s Project Limestone in Young County was proposed to be a hydrogen production facility located along FM 209 on a 40-acre site that would produce 45 tons per day of hydrogen from water using renewable energy sources.

Graham Convenience Station sets spring clean up dates

The Graham Convenience Station will have free drop off for three Saturdays in April as part of a spring cleaning event with the city of Graham.

The convenience station at 1421 Ave. F will be open to Graham residents from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 11, April 18 and April 25 to give city residents the opportunity to dispose of household items for free.

Proof of city residency must be shown with a city water bill to be eligible. No construction materials, commercial dumping or tires are eligible for free services for these spring cleaning dates.

Graham remembers Fields, a dedicated city leader

Over three decades of service to the city of Graham only makes up a portion of the dedication Larry Fields provided to the community during his lifetime.

Fields died Wednesday, April 1 after previously serving as city manager and interim city manager for over 30 years in Graham. 

Fields was born Jan. 19, 1948 in Sweetwater and later moved to Kress, where he met his future wife Judy Harris.

He graduated from Kress High School in 1966 and attended West Texas State University on a basketball scholarship.

City approves ordinance restricting use of electric scooters

Following a public hearing and discussion with amendments, the Graham City Council voted to enact an ordinance that would add electric scooter restrictions, primarily for those under 16 years old.

A public hearing was held Thursday, April 2 alongside the city council meeting to receive public comments on the proposed ordinance. Speakers came out and submitted responses to the city regarding the proposal.

Graham resident Crystal Castro thanked the city and Graham Police Department for responding to her questions regarding the ordinance and was in favor of its approval.

City of Graham responds to RKJ lawsuit

The city of Graham responded in March to a lawsuit filed by RKJ Adventures, LLC seeking over $1 million in relief for an alleged breach of contract regarding a 2022 lease agreement for Lake Eddleman Park.

The city of Graham submitted an answer and an amended answer in March in response to a lawsuit filed by RKJ Adventures, LLC in January alleging a breach of contract along with other claims.

(ARCHIVE PHOTO | THE GRAHAM LEADER) The Graham City Council approved and authorized the city manager to negotiate a contract for a water and wastewater rate study. The study will look at rates for anticipated debt, study the rates for outside of the city ratepayers and determine what is causing a revenue shortfall.

City requests additional water, sewer rate study

The city of Graham is contracting with Willdan Financial Services for a water and sewer rate study to determine a rate needed for future debt payments, studying the outside of the city rates and causes of decreases in revenue.

The Graham City Council met Thursday, April 2 and authorized the city manager to negotiate a contract with the company not to exceed $10,000 for three tasks.

Graham Food Pantry opens after renovations

Following renovations to expand multiple aspects of the Graham Crisis Center, the Graham Food Pantry is open again for clients that utilize its services.

The pantry announced Thursday, April 2 that it was reopened following renovations at the facility. The facility is open from 10 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Graham hosting police K-9 certification trials next week

Around 25 police canines and their handlers will be visiting Graham next week to participate in the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) Region 25 certification trials.

The certification trials will be held from April 7-9 at the Young County Arena as well as other various locations in Graham. Dog breeds at the event will include German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, Bloodhounds, Border Collies and more. 

The event was last held in Graham in 2022 at Newton Field and other Graham ISD facilities.

• Rebecca Jan Kramer, 63, of Graham, pleaded guilty to the offense of driving while intoxicated, third or more, and was sentenced to 12 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division (TDCJ-ID) and was ordered to pay a $6,000 fine, court costs and restitution.
