Early voting upcoming for May election

In a little over two weeks, early voting will begin for the May local election which has contested races across the county.

On the ballot in May will be local elections for the Graham Hospital District, Newcastle ISD, Olney ISD and the city of Olney. 

Early voting in the May election will run from April 20-28 and election day will be Saturday, May 2. Voting is being held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 20 and April 22-24 and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 27-28.

GISD planning committee discusses cost estimates

As the Graham ISD Facilities Planning Committee continues its efforts to chart the future of the district’s campuses, the group recently discussed construction estimates for potential projects.

One of the topics of the committee meeting Wednesday, March 18 was project estimates and pricing. Project estimates were presented by Lane Pendleton and Beverly Fornof of Corgan and Bowie Franks of Gallagher Construction Company.

Young County 4-H Shooting Sports provides lifelong skills

With options such as archery, rifle and shotgun, the Young County 4-H Shooting Sports program provides activities and skills for youth that can last a lifetime.

Texas 4-H provides youth development programs for participants from ages 8-18. To participate in shooting sports, participants must be enrolled as a 4-H member and then connect with the Young County 4-H Shooting Sports club for details.

Texas 4-H Ambassador and Young County 4-H member Maddie Hearne works to promote the 4-H Shooting Sports Program and is in her second year with the local 4-H archery club.

Statewide drill April 2 for public warning systems

A mandated statewide local alert will be held next week to evaluate the functionality of the public warning tools available as directed by the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

The planned drill will be conducted from 10 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2. TDEM Young County Liaison Officer Jarod Cook spoke with the Graham City Council during their meeting Thursday, March 19 about the statewide test.

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) Open Door Christian School hosted its packaging day for the Feed the Need program which provides 10,000 meals to those in need across the globe. This year, the program provided meals for families in Bangladesh.

Feeding a need: ODCS gives back through feeding program

For a fifth year, students and volunteers at Open Door Christian School packaged meals through their Feed the Need program which will supply 10,000 meals for families in Bangladesh. 

The program is run in conjunction with the Feed the Hunger program which provides meals to at-risk children and others in need and has packed over 53 million meals since its founding in 1968.

ODCS held its packing day Wednesday, March 26, with students and volunteers set up at stations to begin packaging meals.

City to consider approval of $14.7 million debt in April

In a little over three weeks, the Graham City Council will consider taking the next step to issue $14.7 million in debt for a rehabilitation project at the wastewater treatment plant and the purchase of a new fire truck.

The city council will consider the Notice of Intent (NOI) to issue Certificates of Obligation (COs) not to exceed $14.7 million during their meeting Thursday, April 16. An ordinance approving the sale of the COs will be considered during a council meeting Thursday, June 11.

Public hearing next week on scooter ordinance

The city will be accepting public comments next week related to an ordinance that could enact electric scooter restrictions for those under 16 years old.

After discussing a proposed ban Thursday, March 5, the Graham City Council requested changes to add restrictions rather than an outright ban. The council discussed those changes during their meeting Thursday, March 19.

Crawfish and Cannons blasting off at Fort Belknap

Cannon fire, crawfish, music and more will be taking off next month during the Graham Crawfish and Cannons and Goodnight-Loving Run at Fort Belknap.

The annual Goodnight-Loving Run kicks off the day Saturday, April 11 with a 5K, 10K and half marathon starting at the entrance of Fort Belknap in Newcastle at 114 Fort Circle.

Registration can be completed online until the day of the event, with race-day registration being held from 7:30-8:15 a.m. on site. The cost for registration is $50 for the 5K, $70 for the 10K and $95 for the half marathon.
