Local county cemetery research still underway

Saturday was a celebration of the work completed and underway at the Oak Grove Colored - William P. Johnston Cemetery and the efforts to uncover the history that lies beneath its soil.

Since the beginning of March 2024, Dr. Tamra Walter, a historical archaeologist and associate professor of archeology at Texas Tech University, along with students and the descendant community have worked to unearth the history of the Young County cemetery.

Browning hired as GISD assistant superintendent of finance, operations

Following an executive session, the Graham ISD Board of Trustees made the unanimous decision this week to hire Gary Browning as the GISD Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations.

Browning previously served as the GISD Director of Curriculum and will be moving into the position formerly held by Don Davis. 

Superintendent Mary Johnston spoke at the school board meeting Wednesday, Feb. 12 about Browning’s background in education.

Young County youth see success at Fort Worth Stock Show

Several youth in Young County traveled to participate in the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo held through the end of last week and returned with medals for their efforts.

Following the Young County Junior Livestock Show held at the beginning of January, the youth in the county have begun moving on to other shows around the state including the show in Fort Worth and the San Angelo Stock Show, which is currently ongoing.

GISD board recognizes elementary UIL success

Students of Woodland Elementary School and Crestview Elementary School were recognized by the Graham ISD Board of Trustees for their recent UIL successes.

Parents, guardians, staff and students filled the board meeting room Tuesday, Feb. 12 as the group came together in honor of the students.

“We hosted Burkburnett and Brock and we had our UIL elementary contest with several different categories, and you saw all the winners that our wonderful school district produced,” Superintendent Mary Johnston said. “We're here tonight to celebrate those students.”

Flying high over Super Bowl LIX: Pitcock’s squadron participates in flyover

Former Graham resident Justin Pitcock has led a life of service that has taken him across the globe and now brought him a once in a lifetime opportunity of flying over the Super Bowl.

Pitcock’s reserve squadron was recently picked for the Super Bowl LIX flyover and he received another incredible feat to add to his collection.

“Each of our cockpits will have a couple thousand hours in them. That’s hard to find that kind of experience,” he said. “They came to us, and I was lucky enough to raise my hand and get to do it. So I’m pretty excited.”

Filing deadline Friday for local elections

Area residents have one final opportunity this week to file for seats open in local elections.

City council and school board seats in Graham, Olney and Newcastle are up for election with applications available at each individual entity. Additionally, there are open seats for the Olney Hamilton Hospital Board of Directors.

Applications to file can be submitted to local political subdivisions through Friday, Feb. 14. The election will take place Saturday, May 3.

City hosting first budget planning meeting Thursday

The public has their first opportunity to be a part of the budget planning process for the city of Graham during a workshop being held Thursday.

The budget workshop will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 at 608 Elm St. in Graham. 

During the meeting, City Manager Eric Garretty will provide a presentation on the draft fiscal year 2026 budget and discuss key budget issues.
