City taking first steps in pursuit of state grants

The city of Graham will submit a grant application to be considered for funding from the Texas Department of Transportation for a proposed sidewalk and hike and bike trail. 

The Transportation Alternative Set-Aside (TA) Program from TxDOT is administered for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure projects in communities. 

City Manager Eric Garretty said since the deadline for the application is approaching at the end of February, the Graham City Council needed to give direction on how they wanted to proceed on the two-part application process.

When Graham resident Kaylee Clay, with the help of others, decided to host an “Everything Protest” on the Graham downtown square they could not have imagined the turnout that would follow.

With nearly 50 showing up in support of the protest Sunday, Feb. 2, which centered on issues such as women’s and immigration rights, people made their voices heard in Graham.

Bahl indicted on 16 child pornography charges

A Graham man who is sitting in the Young County Jail on $2.7 million bond for 16 child pornography charges was indicted by a grand jury this week on all charges.

The indictments state that, sometimes on multiple dates within the same month, in June 2024, August 2024, September 2024, October 2024 and November 2024, William Michael Bahl II, 54, of Graham, possessed either video or images of child pornography.

A solar project in Young County west of Eliasville is in the early phases of development from Titus Low Carbon Ventures.

Titus LCV President Jeff Ferguson and Texas Energy Consultants President Robert Peña spoke Monday, Jan. 27 about the Tapaderos Solar project with the Young County Commissioners Court.

“The Tapaderos project is slated to be 300 megawatts with a 200 megawatt onsite battery energy storage system,” Ferguson said. “We are very excited about the project. It’s one of our top-tier assets that we have in our portfolio.”

County hears public concerns regarding roads, infrastructure

The Young County Commissioners Court took another step to obtain a grant for infrastructure projects by accepting public comments regarding local concerns.

The county hosted a public hearing Monday, Jan. 27 to discuss the federal Safe Streets for All grant planning process for transportation infrastructure in the county with a goal of preventing roadway deaths and serious injuries.

Master of mixing: Briseno’s bartending skills impress at BourbonCon

From California to Texas, Gabriel Briseno has made a name for himself in the bartending scene. The master of mixing recently flexed his skills at BourbonCon in Lexington, Kentucky, and returned home winning the mixologist competition.

The fourth-annual BourbonCon was held Jan. 17-19, and Briseno made the trip from Graham to Lexington to go up against other bartenders chosen for the competition. Originally three were set to compete, but t the competition urned into a head-to-head affair.

One injured in three-vehicle wreck on FM 1287 bridge

A three-vehicle wreck last week on the FM 1287 bridge over the Brazos River resulted in one being transported to Fort Worth with injuries.

The wreck occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, on FM 1287 south of Old Bunger Road, according to a press release from Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Juan Gutierrez.

A preliminary DPS investigation revealed that a 1996 Kenworth truck towing a utility trailer driven by James David Sandlin, 70, of Olney, was traveling north on FM 1287 across the bridge.
