Graham ISD approves over $1 million in purchases using ESSER III funding

The Graham ISD Board of Trustees approved the use of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief III (ESSER III) funding for over $1 million in purchases during their meeting Wednesday. The ESSER III program is intended to help schools safely reopen and remain open in a safe manner while addressing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students.

Food Truck Frenzy: Food Truck Championship hits Graham

Graham’s biggest event made a return Saturday after a one-year lapse due to COVID-19, bringing with it over 40 food trucks and thousands of hungry people from near and far visiting the Food Truck Championship of Texas.

The day had three main events which started with the Possum Pedal bike ride on the downtown square which led into the food truck event in which food trucks vied for the $10,000 grand prize on the line. The day closed with a sold-out concert at the Young County Arena featuring Whiskey Myers, Read Southall and the Old 97’s.

ODCS students build wheelchair for 7-year-old New York girl

For one month fourth grade students at Open Door Christian School labored to make a difference in the life of a 7-year-old girl in New York, building a motorized wheelchair for her as a part of their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) class.

ODCS STEM Coordinator Claire Meschkat said throughout the year the students learned about the engineering design process and applying math and science concepts to solve a problem, but she wanted to take that a step further for the fourth grade class.

Ringing far and near: Class of 2021 GHS students graduate

The Class of 2021 made their voices loudly ring and echo far and near as they completed their high school journey Friday during their graduation ceremony at Graham High School.

Over 150 students were honored Friday at the GHS gym. The ceremony was moved on graduation day from Newton Field due to weather concerns. Principal Joe Gordy introduced the event and 2021 Class President Olivia Isom gave the welcome speech.

OPOMAC celebrates album art through Vinyl Revival

Vinyl music is on the comeback. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, in 2020 vinyl sales increased 29.2% to $619.6 million, compared to $479.5 million in 2019. Vinyl albums outsold CD sales for the first time since 1988. The resurrection of vinyl music has been coined the “vinyl revival.”

The Old Post Office Museum & Art Center will celebrate the revival with the museum’s first event since the relaxation of covid-related restrictions with Vinyl Revival 2021 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 4 at the museum.

TPWD approves grants for city park improvements

The city of Graham was awarded matching grant funding from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Thursday after a decision was approved by the commission for the department. The city applied for a Recreational Trails and Local Park grant through the department to extend the scope of the existing money they received for park improvements in 2018 from the Brazos River Authority.

Proposed wind farm to receive additional public hearings

A second public hearing has been scheduled regarding a wind farm project proposed for Young County. The Young County Commissioners Court will open the floor for public opinion at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 10, at the Young County Courthouse.

After seeing an increase of interest from adjacent landowners to the current reinvestment zone, Young Wind LLC, has requested an additional zone, Reinvestment Zone No. 2, to accommodate those landowners. The court approved the first zone after the first public hearing on April 26.
