County increasing jury service reimbursement

Jurors and prospective jurors in Young County will now receive an increased reimbursement of expenses when reporting for service in a court.

The Texas Government Code was recently amended to implant this financial compensation increase throughout the state of Texas.

According to the updated state code, jurors and prospective jurors are entitled to receive reimbursement for travel and other expenses of no less than $20 on the first day and no less than $58 for the second day and any other day beyond the initial day.

GISD accepting nominations for Hall of Honor dedication

Graham ISD and Graham Public Education Foundation are accepting nominations for the annual Hall of Honor dedication ceremony. The ceremony honors GISD alumni, staff and community members who have provided meritorious service to the district or their profession.

Nominations are accepted through Thursday, Nov. 9 in five categories which are Distinguished Alumni Award, Distinguished Staff Award, Distinguished Community Member Award, Historical Award and Posthumous Consideration.

Gov. Abbott appoints Gregory as 90th Judicial District Judge

Assistant District Attorney Phillip Gregory was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to the position of 90th Judicial District Court Judge in Stephens and Young counties. Gregory will fill the unexpired term of former judge Stephen Bristow, who retired Saturday, Sept. 30.

Gregory has served as the 90th Judicial District ADA since being sworn in February 2016. He received notice of the appointment Friday, Oct. 6, and will be sworn in at the conclusion of his two weeks notice to the Young County District Attorney’s office.

The road to recovery: Graham infant recovering after receiving liver donation

After months of waiting for a donor, infant Everleigh Deck, of Graham, received the liver transplant she desperately needed to survive and is on the road to recovery.

Everleigh’s parents, Taylor and Tyson, had done all they could but simply had to wait and hope and pray for the best. Finally, on Sept. 22, Everleigh received the transplant surgery for her liver and has steadily been improving since then.

Local business changes hands after 50 years

After 50 years of owning and operating Gramco/NAPA Auto Parts in Graham, Derrell Smith sold the business and the new owner took over at the beginning of October. Smith will continue to stay on working in a different capacity for the business he has always loved.

Smith was born and raised in Graham and in high school worked for the same auto parts store where his father worked, Service Parts. His dad became the manager of the store and after the passing of the owners planned to open his own store.

Early voting approaching in November election

Early voting in the November election begins in a little over two weeks as the deadline for registering to vote in the election is Tuesday. The ballot will contain 14 constitutional amendments as well as a bond measure for the Olney Hamilton Hospital District.

Early voting will be held Monday, Oct. 23 through Friday, Nov. 3. Early voting polling locations are North Central Texas College at 928 Cherry St. in Graham and Olney Community Library at 807 W. Hamilton St. in Olney.

GHS students hosting Fields of Faith event

In coordination with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Graham ISD students and others from surrounding districts will meet next week at Newton Field for the 15th annual Fields of Faith event.

The event will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, with gates opening at 6:30 p.m. and the main event beginning at 7 p.m. The interdenominational event will be held at more than 500 locations throughout the nation as students gather to spend an evening sharing their faith and beliefs.

FEMA, FCC performing nationwide alert test tomorrow

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Federal Communication Commission, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) tomorrow. The tests are part of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS).

The test will be conducted at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 and will be distributed through radio, television and cell phone communication.
