Suzy, Win Graham named Citizens of the Year

Local superstars were honored last Tuesday at the Graham Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Grahammy Awards and Taste of Graham in the Young County Arena, celebrating a century of growth in the community. Introductions were made to both events by Graham Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Krisa De La Cruz. After a wine tasting, the Taste of Graham kicked off and visitors chose which of the 16 participating local restaurants was their favorite in multiple award categories.

Contractors, not AT&T, causing area phone outages

Graham has seen its fair share of problems when it comes to connection issues with AT&T, but the cause of these problems lies with those severing the lines, and not AT&T, Judge John Bullock said at the Graham City Council meeting Thursday. The Nortex Regional Planning Commission, a voluntary association of local governments in North Texas, held an executive directors’ meeting this month and discussed with AT&T representatives some of the problems that have affected not only Young County but seven other counties in the area.

Masonic auction accepting consignments for 2018 sale

The Young County Masonic Lodge is seeking auction items for their 11th annual public consignment auction in March, an event that provides county students with scholarships. The old ag barn in Graham will again host visitors on March 10, all looking for the chance to secure items that could be anything from bullets to buggys. Past consignment sales by the Masons have included items from the city of Graham, Young County, Olney ISD, Archer City ISD, Newcastle ISD and various local individuals and businesses.

OPOMAC board chooses Browning as interim director

After moving to Graham only last year, Lynsey Browning, will temporarily take the reigns of the Old Post Office Museum and Arts Center as its interim director, the OPOMAC board announced. Browning was born and raised in Southwest Missouri and in 2004, moved to Tyler with her family. She attended High School at Grace Community School in Tyler where she contributed greatly to the startup of the family business.

Feds condemn Texas’ special ed cap, demand remedies

A February investigation by the federal Office of Special Education into special education enrollment in Texas showed the Texas Education Agency didn’t provide therapy, tutoring and counseling to tens of thousands of eligible children, according to a report published last Thursday. The U.S. Department of Education’s OSEP visited school districts in Texas during the week of Feb. 27, 2017 after reports of the declining identification rate in Texas of children with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

City sets dates for public hearings on annexations

The City of Graham is planning to annex a portion of land across from Fawn Trail on Spivey Hill and scheduled two public hearings regarding the annexation during their Thursday, Jan. 11 city council meeting. The two properties involved are 101 and 105 Fawn Trail and are bordering the neighborhood of Spivey Hill, which is within the city limits and receives services from the city including fire, police, building inspections, planning and zoning and all other applicable municipal services.

Fort to host monthly hands-on educational programs

The Friends of Fort Belknap are sponsoring a Living History Program every second Saturday throughout 2018 at Fort Belknap, with the first starting on Jan. 13, featuring black-iron cooking. The organization will have a new living history program every month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for all ages. The cost of each program is $3 per person and the public is invited to stay as long as they like for each. A youth program will be held on the same dates, from 10-11 a.m., to introduce living history and re-enacting skills to a younger generation.

Graham PD commends six for meritorious service

Graham’s men and women in blue received six awards for their meritorious service during the year of 2017 at the Graham Police Department’s Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 14. Officers receiving letters of commendation were Officers Mary Odom and Crystal Noyola and Sergeant Daryl Bell. According to the announcement on Facebook, this award was given due to the work put forth by these three to assist investigators with location and processing video and electronic data in cases.

Young County hero honored with sign on U.S. 380 to Bryson

The portion of U.S. 380 from Graham eastward to the limits of Bryson in Jack County was designated as the Henry H. King Memorial Highway after a decision passed in the 85th legislative session and a dedication held last Thursday in Graham. Present at the dedication was Texas District 68 Representative Drew Springer, members of the Graham VFW Memorial Post 8567, American Volunteer Reserve, veterans and community members and public servants. It was a day to honor King and the legacy of his life.
