City approves rehabilitation of Woodland Pump Station

The city of Graham is negotiating a contract for the rehabilitation of the Woodland Pump Station as a measure to improve aging water infrastructure within the city.

The Graham City Council met Thursday, Aug. 28 and approved City Manager Eric Garretty to negotiate and conclude a contract with Curtis Service Company, LLC, not exceeding $511,500, which includes a 10% contingency above the bid amount.

City hears public concerns during town hall meeting

Members of the community made their voices heard during a town hall meeting this week hosted by the city of Graham, with a number of concerns and suggestions raised by residents.

The city hosted the town hall meeting Tuesday, Aug. 26 so that members of the public could get a back-and-forth dialogue with city staff and the Graham City Council, something not permitted during the public comment section of a regular city council meeting.

GISD board adopts budget, voter-approval tax rate

Following a public hearing, the Graham ISD Board of Trustees adopted a budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year, with planned initiatives to improve the district’s financial standing.

The GISD board held a public hearing where they voted to adopt the budget and tax rate Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the GISD Administration Building. 

Chief Financial Officer Gary Browning spoke to the trustees during the meeting as well as during meetings held Wednesday, Aug. 6 and Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Final Texoma Gives event next week

A decade of giving back to Texas and Oklahoma nonprofits will come to a successful conclusion with the final Texoma Gives fundraising event being held next week.

Since 2016, the Wichita Falls Area Community Foundation has hosted the online fundraising day Texoma Gives. Their final event will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 benefiting Young County and other area nonprofits.

County defers gazebo bids to Level 5 Architecture

The Young County Commissioners Court reviewed and took no action on bids this week pertaining to the construction of a new courthouse gazebo. 

County Auditor Cheryl Roberts presented the bids to the commissioners court Monday, Aug. 25.

There were four total bids on the gazebo with three of them being full bids for funding on construction and the fourth being a bid for funding on installing electrical services within the gazebo.

County cemetery survey uncovers potential unmarked graves

A ground penetrating radar survey of the Oak Grove Colored - William P. Johnston Cemetery and area adjacent to the county cemetery uncovered over 40 possible unmarked graves.

Texas Cemetery Restoration collected GPR data of approximately 0.5 acres at the Young County cemetery located on the Hwy. 380 bypass and the adjacent city of Graham-owned lot. The data uncovered 47 possible unmarked graves within the survey area.

GISD to appoint School Library Advisory Council

Following the passage of Texas Senate Bill 13, Graham ISD recently moved to establish a School Library Advisory Council to focus on the collection and availability of library materials for students and faculty.

The GISD Board of Trustees discussed the council at meetings in August and approved the creation of a SLAC within the district and amended their local policy for “instructional resources library materials.”

City taking next step this week on housing development rezoning

Following two public hearings, the city will have a final reading this week to rezone a property on Indiana Street for potential development of townhomes or single family residential homes.

The Graham City Council held a public hearing for the rezoning of a property at 1103 Indiana St. from Local Retail to Townhouse. A third and final reading of the ordinance to rezone the property will be considered at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at the council chamber at 608 Elm St.

Drawing to be held for duck blinds at Lake Graham, Eddleman

The city of Graham will be holding a drawing in September to set up a temporary duck blind at Lake Graham or Lake Eddleman.

The random drawing will be held Thursday, Sept. 11 and email notification will be sent to the 20 winners. Drawn applicants plus one guest will be issued temporary duck blind special use permits for Lake Eddleman and Lake Graham.

The applicants and their guests will be required to comply with the state hunting regulations and the city of Graham code of ordinances.

Young County District Clerk to resign in September

After over a decade of service in Young County, District Clerk Jamie Land announced that she will be resigning from her position in September.

Land made her announcement during the public comment section of the Young County Commissioners Court meeting Monday, Aug. 25. 

“I am resigning as district clerk effective Sept. 12, 2025, as I have accepted a new position as Regional Data Coordinator with the Office of Court Administration,” Land said. “I will work closely with the clerk appointed by (District) Judge (Phillip) Gregory to ensure a smooth transition.”
