City hears public comments on proposed rate increases

Graham residents came out last week to raise concerns to the city council regarding a proposed rate increase for the water and sewer rates.

A public hearing on the proposed water and sewer rate increases was held Thursday, July 31 at the regular meeting of the Graham City Council. 

The water and sewer funds are enterprise funds for the city that are supported solely by the rates that are charged for those services.

Future planning: GRMC unveils 2026 Business Plan

Graham Regional Medical Center took a big step in its development for the upcoming year by presenting its 2026 business plan. 

GRMC CEO Shane Kernell presented the business plan to the hospital board during their regular monthly meeting Thursday, July 31.

After giving a layout of the hospital’s statistics over the past year and a general run down of demographics in the town of Graham, Kernell presented the revenues the hospital has generated this past year.

Taking feedback: City to survey residents on services, offerings

As part of a grant requirement from the Texas General Land Office, the city of Graham will be surveying the community soon regarding its services as a step to create a comprehensive plan.

The city received a grant from the Texas General Land Office to engage in planning activities under the Resilient Communities Program.

The program promotes the development, adoption and implementation of modern and resilient building codes and flood damage presentation ordinances to ensure structures in the community can withstand future hazards.

Following a meeting of the Newcastle ISD Board of Trustees last week, the district released their new communication device policy in line with House Bill 1481.

The district will require all students to leave their electronic devices at home or power them off and store them away while on the campus. 

Devices will not be allowed to be used at any time during school hours.

Back-to-school sales tax holiday next week

State and local residents can get their children prepared with back-to-school savings through a state sales tax holiday next week. 

The sales tax holiday will be held Friday, Aug. 8 through Sunday, Aug. 10 with sales tax exemptions on items priced below $100. 

The Texas Comptroller’s office estimates shoppers will save an estimated $133.2 million in state and local sales taxes during the holiday next month.

City holds on accepting bid for Firemen’s Park trails

The Graham City Council voted to further delay a project that has been in progress since 2018 to construct trails at Firemen’s Park by tabling a motion to accept a bid contract.

The city council met Thursday, July 31 and made a motion to reconsider the approval of a bid contract during their budget workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7.

The city received $1.3 million from the BRA for park improvement projects in June 2018.

Young County museum putting finishing touches before grand opening

After what has been years of anticipation, the Young County Museum of History and Culture is just under a month away from its grand opening. 

The museum’s official opening day is Saturday, Aug. 30, where families will be able to enjoy food and beverages, like beef and buffalo sliders, provided by the museum, see its finished exhibits and displays and also check out souvenirs from its gift shop.

GISD to consider new policy soon for personal communication devices

Following guidance from House Bill 1481, Graham ISD will soon be considering a new policy for cellphones and other personal communication devices prior to the beginning of the school year.

In June, Superintendent Mary Johnston said the district is expected to provide policy updates for the GISD Board of Trustees to review Wednesday, Aug. 6 and vote on Tuesday, Aug. 12. No new district policy regarding personal communication devices has been presented or approved by the school board.

Back-to-school immunization clinic next week in Graham

The Texas Department of State Health Services is hosting an immunization clinic in Graham next week as a final free opportunity before heading back to school.

The clinic will be held by appointment Tuesday, Aug. 5 at First United Methodist Church at 700 Third St. 

The clinic will have immunizations for children entering kindergarten, seventh grade or college in the fall.

Parents or guardians over the age of 19 must accompany a minor under the age of 18 to the clinic.

There will be no charge for the immunizations to eligible children and adults.

The Young County Commissioners Court enacted a burn ban Monday, March 10 that restricts all outdoor burning in the county.

County enacts burn ban

The Young County Commissioners Court voted to enact a burn ban that will run through October unless terminated earlier by the court or the county judge.

The commissioners ordered the ban Monday, July 28 due to the public safety hazard present if burning was allowed.

Young County Judge Win Graham said a burn ban was requested by the county volunteer fire departments as well the emergency management coordinators.
