Commissioners approve elected official salary raises for budget

For the past several months, the Young County Commissioners Court has been meeting to arrange the budget for the fiscal year 2026. The court took another step towards that by voting to set elected official salaries.

This critical step took place at their weekly meeting Monday, July 28. The main discussion surrounding elected official salaries was the potential of giving raises to all employees in the county.

Preparing for the new school year

As the beginning of the school year for Graham ISD approaches, the days are counting down to finish up getting students prepared for the new year.

GISD released information regarding the back-to-school activities for the 2025-2026 school year.

New student registration is currently underway at each campus and will be available until Friday, Aug. 1. The first day of school for students will be Wednesday, Aug. 13.

Lewis accepts plea for 2021 manslaughter

A sentence of six years community supervision was accepted by Geneva Lewis for a charge of manslaughter related to the February 2021 death of her 19-month-old foster child. 

Lewis, 47, of Graham, accepted a plea Tuesday, July 22 of six years community supervision and a $2,500 fine in lieu of 10 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice - Institutional Division.

Public hearing next week on proposed city rate increases

The public will have an opportunity next week to provide their comments regarding proposed water and sewer rate increases from the city of Graham.

A public hearing on the proposed water and sewer rate increases will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31 at 608 Elm St. A second reading on the tax rate and budget ordinances are also scheduled to be held with this regular city council meeting.

Kuykendall wins national honors at Junior National Hereford Expo

Graham’s Adelynn Kuykendall achieved high marks in the peewee division of two competitions at the National Junior Hereford Association Junior National Hereford Expo.

Kuykendall placed top 10 in the overall showmanship competition and in the top three of the illustrated speech competition in the peewee division at the National Junior Hereford Association Junior National Hereford Expo.

The event was held from July 12-18 in Louisville, Kentucky. Lauren May, Stillwater, Oklahoma, evaluated the peewee and junior showmanship competitions.

Fernandez accepts plea for money laundering

The motorist involved in a March 2024 reckless driving call that led to an arrest and seizure of $39,050 in cash, took a plea agreement this week of four years community supervision.

Rodolfo Fernandez, 35, of Taylor County, accepted a plea Tuesday, July 22 of four years community supervision and a fine of $2,500. 

Fernandez was arrested Feb. 27, 2024 and charged with money laundering over $30,000, possession of marijuana under two ounces and driving while license invalid.

Fowler accepts plea for 2022 cross-county vehicle pursuit

A Wichita Falls woman, who was arrested in November 2022 in Archer County following a vehicle pursuit that began in Young County, accepted a plea of four years deferred adjudication community supervision.

Samantha Fowler, 20, was arrested Nov. 29, 2022 on charges of evading arrest in a motor vehicle, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a controlled substance in penalty group two, under 4 grams, and possession of marijuana, under 2 ounces.

County commissioners review plans for new courthouse gazebo

Young County Commissioners discussed and reviewed plans to replace the old courthouse gazebo and build a new one on the courthouse lawn. 

Justin Gilmore of Level 5 Architecture presented the plans to the commissioners at their meeting Monday, July 21. 

“I appreciate the opportunity to design this new gazebo for you guys,” Gilmore said. “I’ve been working with commissioner (Jimmy) Wiley bit by bit on this. I have the final sets of plans on this gazebo design.”

TxDOT hosting virtual ADA outreach awareness event

In an effort to bring awareness and obtain public comments on the Texas Department of Transportation’s commitment to the ADA Accessibility Program and future projects, a virtual event will be held next week.

The meeting will be available virtually from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 30 until midnight Thursday, Aug. 14. 

The meeting will be titled “Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) outreach Wichita Falls District.”
