Preschool students receive water safety, awareness training

For a second year, Pioneer Elementary School preschool students completed a swimming boot camp which was coordinated by Tracey Terasas and funded by Cook Children’s Medical Center and Graham ISD.

Terasas is co-founder of the Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety organization in Graham, which seeks to spread the message of water safety and provide life jackets for all children.

City of Graham researching Hwy. 16 sidewalk project

The city of Graham began discussions last week regarding a potential sidewalk project along Hwy. 16 and developing a plan to obtain funding through a federal reimbursement program from the Texas Department of Transportation.

TxDOT made $252.5 million available in the Transportation Alternative Set-Aside (TA) program through their TA Call for Projects for fiscal years 2022 through 2025.

City water plant lagoon rehabilitation poses high price tag

The Graham City Council last week authorized the city manager to advertise for bids for a proposed rehabilitation of the lagoons at the city water treatment plant. The city is looking to rebuild, reclaim the water and dispose of over 5,700 tons of sludge in the lagoons.

The city owns and operates its water treatment plant and distribution system which provides water to the residents of Graham and Young County. The water treatment facility is designed to treat six million gallons of water each day and part of that process is spillover of solids in the treated water.

Texas Rangers investigating inmate death at Young County Jail

The Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers are investigating a death that occurred last week at the Young County Jail. A Mineral Wells man was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday, March 21 and transported to Graham Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

A Thursday, March 30 release from DPS Sgt. Dan Buesing states Brandon Taylor, 31, was found unresponsive in an administrative segregation cell. The release states staff immediately began to attempt to revive Taylor until EMS arrived.

GRMC Auxiliary Chalupa Luncheon fundraiser next week

For over 50 years, the Graham Regional Medical Center Auxiliary has hosted the Chalupa Luncheon in Graham as a fundraiser to help provide equipment for the hospital.

The luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6 on the Young County Courthouse lawn. The event serves as a fundraiser to provide equipment for the hospital to enhance the quality of care at GRMC for its patients.

Commissioners approve two speed limit changes

Young County Commissioners held a pair of public hearings Monday and voted to approve speed limit reductions on two county roads. Mary Rutherford Road, in precinct 4 and Bullock Road, in precinct 2, will both have new speed limits of 35 mph.

A public hearing was requested by Precinct 4 Commissioner Jimmy Wiley after hearing from a property owner on Mary Rutherford Road. Wiley said the road has experienced a lot of traffic going over the previous speed limit of 45 mph.

Two weeks remain to complete county broadband assessment

Young County residents and business owners have two weeks remaining to complete a broadband survey designed to assess the county’s internet needs and usage.

At the end of January, the Young County Broadband Committee and Connected Nation Texas announced the launch of the online broadband assessment. The final date for the Young County survey will be Saturday, April 15.

CEO for Graham Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau, Cathy Partridge, said Thursday, March 30 that the county has yet to receive enough responses on the assessment.
