Run for the Children celebrates 20 years, returns this weekend

The annual Run for the Children 10K, 5K and 1K Fun Run will return for a 20th year on the downtown square this weekend benefiting Virginia’s House and Dr. Goodall’s House.

The run will be held Saturday, April 26 with the start and finish line at Third Street and Oak Street. Start times are 7:30 a.m. for the 10K, 7:35 a.m. for the 5K and 9 a.m. for the 1K Fun Run inside the downtown square.

Race day registration and packet pickup opens at 6:30 a.m. at the race site and is available online at runsignup.com or at runforthechildrentx.org.

A state sales tax holiday will kick off this weekend for emergency supplies to prepare residents for severe weather such as fires, floods and tornadoes. 

Eligible items can be purchased tax free during the holiday that will be held from Saturday, April 26 through Monday, April 28. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items that can be purchased during the holiday.

Early voting is underway across the state in Young County for local elections on the general election ballot.

The city of Graham, Graham ISD and Newcastle ISD have contested elections after candidates filed for open seats on the city council and district board of trustees.

Early voting runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 through Friday, April 25 and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 28-29.

Brown recognized by university for law work

After partnering with local law firm Turner & Allen last year, John Brown recently hit another milestone when he was recognized by his university as one of the top 10 alumni of the last decade.

Brown was recognized Friday, April 4 by St. Mary’s University School of Law as one of 10 outstanding alumni who have graduated within the past 10 years and was a recipient of the 10 Under 10 Award.

School district 2023 A-F ratings to be released statewide Thursday

Following a ruling from the 15th Court of Appeals, the 2023 A-F Academic Accountability Ratings for Texas school districts will be released online Thursday.

The 2023 district-level campus ratings were made available to school systems Thursday, April 17 and will be publicly available at txschools.gov Thursday, April 24.

State law requires annual A-F performance rating for Texas public schools, with no ratings issued for five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and temporary injunctions by Travis County courts.

Spreading a message of safety: Family Fun and Fishing next week

Family awareness and water safety are only part of the annual Family Fun and Fishing event which will be held next weekend at Firemen’s Park.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26 offering free life jackets for children, safety lessons, games, food, refreshments and activities. Alongside the event will be the KidFish fishing tournament held from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety Awareness organization hosts the event each year and seeks to spread the message of water safety and provide life jackets for all children.

GRMC Auxiliary annual chalupa luncheon next week

A longstanding fundraising tradition for the Graham Regional Medical Center Auxiliary will return next week on the downtown square but set up in a new location.

The chalupa luncheon fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24 but will be moving from the Young County Courthouse lawn to near the Graham Chamber of Commerce at 608 Elm St.

GPEF provides second round of grants to GISD teachers

Graham Public Education Foundation recently awarded a second round of grants to Graham ISD teachers in the amount of $77,476.83.

The organization is dedicated to enriching and enhancing the education of Graham students. The organization takes a bus with board members and campus administrators, called the prize patrol, to each campus to present awards each year.

One injured in weekend vehicle wreck

A one-vehicle wreck in Young County resulted in a Graham man being airlifted to Fort Worth with injuries.

The wreck occurred around 4:35 p.m. Saturday, April 12 on Hwy. 16 South near Salem Loop, according to a preliminary investigation from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The 2008 Kia passenger car was driven by Taylor Ray Ford, 23, who was traveling west on Hwy. 16 South. The DPS investigation revealed the driver failed to maintain a single lane, left the roadway and struck a tree.

Graham Police Department is investigating multiple cases of theft of firearms related to a spree of vehicle burglaries last Thursday.

GPD officers responded to 12 calls related to vehicle burglaries on the morning of Thursday, April 10. The vehicle burglaries occurred in the Spivey Hill area, including Mustang Drive, Fawn Trail and Chaparral Drive.

Other areas that were hit with burglaries were Oak Forrest, Thomas Lane and Rodgers Drive.
