Villalpando accepts plea for sexual assault of a child

Alexa Villalpando accepted a plea agreement of 10 years deferred adjudication, community supervision, related to a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child from June 2025. 

Villalpando, 20, of Olney, accepted a plea Tuesday, March 3 for the first-degree felony charge and was placed on 10 years deferred adjudication, community supervision, assessed a $1,500 fine and is required to register as a sex offender.

Continuing a legacy of support: Barraza steps in over Graham Crisis Center

Cassandra Barraza will be taking over as the director of Graham Crisis Center this week and continue a mission of supporting those in the community through the efforts of the local nonprofit.

The Graham Crisis Center at 601 Indiana St. is an umbrella nonprofit organization encompassing the Graham Community Food Pantry, Harry’s House women’s shelter, Nifty Thrifty and benevolence fund.

GISD budget planning underway

The planning process for the Graham ISD budget is underway, with the district planning earlier after a permanent shift in the fiscal year from September to July made last year.

During last year’s budget planning, the district was looking at options to improve its financial standing. One method was to change the fiscal year from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31 to July 1 through June 30.

Area fire departments receive TAMFS grants

Fire departments in Young County and surrounding counties were awarded grants last month for equipment from Texas A&M Forest Service.

The Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program (RVFDAP) assists volunteer fire departments with the purchase of equipment and training. Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) awarded a third round of equipment grants this year Friday, Feb. 13.

A total of 14 cases were pleaded in the 90th Judicial District Court for February. Plea information is provided by the 90th Judicial District Attorney’s office.

• Felisiano Villalpando III, 41, of Olney, pleaded true to the violations alleged in the state’s motion to proceed to adjudicate community supervision for the offense of aggravated assault family/house member with deadly weapon, and was sentenced to 30 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division (TDCJ-ID), and was ordered to pay remaining court costs.

City council proposes electronic scooter restrictions

A proposed ban on the operation of electric scooters with the city of Graham has changed into a consideration for restricting operation by age and time of day on certain roads under certain safety conditions.

The Graham City Council met Thursday, March 5 and heard a presentation from City Manager Eric Garretty and Police Chief Brent Bullock, who drafted an ordinance amendment in response to complaints from motorists regarding the use of scooters by minors on city streets.

SNAP restrictions taking effect in April

Those utilizing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be restricted from buying candy or sweetened beverages with their Lone Star Cards in Texas starting in April.

In the state of Texas, SNAP is supplied through a Lone Star Card that can be used similar to a credit card at any store that accepts SNAP. 

These funds cannot be used to purchase tobacco, alcohol or to pay for owed food bills or purchase of items that cannot be eaten or drank. SNAP benefits can be used to purchase food online.

County judge, precinct 4 commissioner candidates heading to runoff

Two candidates for Young County Judge and Precinct 4 Commissioner will be heading to the runoffs following the release of the unofficial primary election results.

Early voting was held from Tuesday, Feb. 17 through Friday, Feb. 27 at two polling locations. Election day voting closed Tuesday, March 3 with a total turnout of 3,750 voters.

Runoff elections include the top two candidates voted in a race that failed to receive 50% of the overall vote plus one vote, or a majority of votes.
