The Graham Leader is recognizing Rylee Moore of the Lady Blues and Keyton Newland of the Bobcats as Athletes of the Week.

Lady Blues celebrate senior night with win over Lady Lions

It was a special night for the Lady Blues as they hosted their senior night for the team this past week. On top of the festivities, the team capped things off with a close victory over the Brownwood Lady Lions in four sets. 

Head coach Marci Faulk took a moment after the game to express her gratitude for being able to coach these young women over the span of four years.

Steers 1-1 in fall league basketball opener

After participating in summer league basketball earlier in June, the Steers varsity basketball team kicked off fall league play this past week. 

The Steers saw a mixed bag of strengths and weaknesses going 1-1 in their first night of play. 

One unique thing about this league is that it is hosted in Graham over the next four weeks. 

The first night of competition took place Monday, Sept. 22, and the Steers started their run of games against Olney and Jacksboro. 

Against the Cubs, Graham balled out on their way to a 66-15 victory.

JV Lady Blues pull out win over Brownwood

The JV Lady Blues got things off to a great start Tuesday as the team beat the Brownwood Lady Lions in three sets. 

The match took place Tuesday, Sept. 23, and got the hometown crowd in a good mood, being that the senior night ceremony for the varsity team took place later in the night. 

Set one saw the team take a stand early, winning it with a commanding final score of 25-16. The team started off hot leading 6-2 and never really looked back.

Lady Blues drop match against Lady Mavericks

It wasn’t the best day for the Lady Blues this weekend, falling  in three sets to the Memorial High School Lady Mavericks. 

Despite this, there were some solid performances all around from the team. 

The team overall put up fights in set one and set three, but couldn’t overcome deficits losing 25-19 in set one and 25-15 in set three respectively. 

The JV team also wasn’t able to pick up a victory, but the freshmen team did succeed and pick up a victory last week.

Bobcats suffer first loss of the season to May

The Newcastle Bobcats have had a hot start to the season, but finally felt the brakes cool a little bit in their loss to the May Tigers. This marks the team’s first loss on the season. 

The matchup took place Friday, Sept. 19, and while the Bobcats had moments to take advantage of things, they ultimately couldn’t get the job done losing to the Tigers 60-42. 

Bobcats head coach Isiah Archer pointed to some specific pieces of emphasis throughout the contest that ultimately led to the team’s undoing.

Steers move to 2-2 after Decatur loss on the road

After two straight home games, the Graham Steers hit the road again to take on the Decatur Eagles and unfortunately couldn’t pull away with a victory. 

The game was a tale of two halves for Graham. The Steers trailed for much of the contest but ultimately made it a fight going into halftime, only for the wheels to come off in the second half of the loss. 

Decatur broke through the middle of Graham’s defense early for a long passing touchdown to go up 7-0.

Graham athletes medal at Battle of the Back 40

The Graham Steers and Lady Blues competed in the Battle of the Back 40 Invitational in Poolville this past week. The teams and individual runners once again had strong performances across the board. 

The Steers and Lady Blues competed against teams like Bridgeport HS, Peaster, Graford, Huckabay, Hico, Weatherford Christian School, Era and Poolville. 

The Steers finished in fourth out of seven spots in the 5K run while the Lady Blues finished sixth in the 3.2K run.

Ladycats make quick work of Gold-Burg in three-set victory

It was a quick day of work for the Newcastle Ladycats as they decimated the Gold-Burg Lady Bears in three sets. 

This was a match that head coach Ashley Archer credits to the team’s heightened intensity over the last several weeks. 

“We’ve been talking a lot about the teams that we’re going to see in district and hopefully playoffs, and we’ve been competing well against teams that are probably better than us,” Archer said. “This is what we would see in the first round of the playoffs, so we need to take care of business.”
