GHS track and field dominates Ram Relays

Graham High School track and field kicked off their season this past weekend in the Mineral Wells Ram Relays and the team had a successful showing.

Graham swept in all four categories. JV boys, JV girls, varsity boys and varsity girls all took first place as a team.

The closest any team came to defeating Graham was Everman’s JV boys, who finished with 150 points to the Steers’ 186 points.

Lady Blues have strong showing at Abilene tourney

Although the perfect start to the season came to an end, the Lady Blues softball team continued to showcase their talent at a tournament in Abilene over the weekend of Feb. 22-24.

The Lady Blues opened their season with four straight wins and picked up another in their first game of the tournament before suffering their first loss of the season in the second game. However, they bounced back and finished the tournament strong and came back with a 3-1 record in four games.

Steers finish 1-3 in Clyde baseball tournament

Graham’s baseball season has gotten off to a slow start this season after they competed in the Clyde tournament over the weekend of Feb. 23-24.

In four games split between the cities of Clyde and Graham, the Steers went 1-3 with the win coming by a large margin and each of the losses by just a few runs each.

The tournament performance dropped the team to 1-4 to start the season, but there are plenty of games left to play and the team will look to improve every time out. Listed below are results, stats and information on each of the games the team played.

Ladycats win Region 3, advance to state tournament

The Newcastle Ladycats’ winning season was put to the test twice over the weekend, and they answered the call both times in major ways.

Competing in the 1A Region 3 tournament held in Mansfield, the Ladycats earned a 47-28 win over Huckabay in their Friday night matchup, then blew out fellow region finalist Dodd City 55-26 to advance to the state tournament in San Antonio this upcoming week.

Calhoun, Bowen earn Athletes of the Week

This past week saw mixed results for a lot of Graham’s sports teams. Seasons are transitioning and spring sports hit full swing.

The Steers basketball team saw their season end in an overtime loss in their bi-district game while the Lady Blues softball team kept their perfect record intact. No matter the results, two players stood out for their respective teams as Reese Calhoun of the Lady Blues and Cash Bowen of the Steers earned selections as The Graham Leader’s Athletes of the Week.

Steers drop season-opener at home to Springtown

The Steers baseball team officially opened their season Monday, Feb. 19 but it ended on a negative note as they took a loss to Springtown 6-2.

In a game where the hits were few and far between, Graham was bitten by errors which led to five of Springtown’s six runs coming as unearned. Other than the fielding mistakes, the Steers played a solid game despite the unwanted outcome.

Ladycats roll on with 62-29 win over Saint Jo

In what was supposed to be one of the Ladycats’ toughest games to date, Newcastle came out and earned one of their biggest wins of their playoff run thus far.

The Ladycats came out on fire on both sides of the ball from the opening tipoff and ran away with a 62-29 victory Tuesday, Feb. 20 over the Saint Jo Lady Panthers. With their third consecutive playoff win, Newcastle has all the momentum in the world as they continue their way towards a championship.

Wild overtime loss ends season for Steers basketball

The Graham Steers went into their bi-district matchup with Sweetwater expecting a battle, as the two teams had met once at the beginning of the regular season.

Tuesday night’s playoff game didn’t prove to be much different in terms of intensity, but this time Graham came out on the wrong side of things and saw their season officially end with a 64-60 overtime loss.

Ladycats push forward with win over Bloomburg

With one playoff victory already under their belts, the Newcastle Ladycats came out on fire in their area round game against Bloomburg and advanced yet again with a 48-34 victory Friday, Feb. 16.

In their first playoff game four days prior, the Ladycats dealt with a slow start to the game before rolling to the win. That wasn’t the case against the Wildcats as Newcastle got the scoring started right away and rode the offensive wave to a victory.
