Lady Blues fall to Lady Lions

The Lady Blues showed signs of promise by overcoming an early 2-0 deficit against the Lady Lions in Glen Rose. However, the Lady Blues’ bats went cold after a two-run home run in the third inning, leading to a 5-2 loss.

A defensive miscue in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday, April 7 by the Lady Blues allowed the Lady Tigers to score runs in consecutive at-bats for the early lead.

Newcastle hosts district track meet

The postseason began this week in track and field with two Young County schools hosting district track meets. 

Newcastle hosted the District 17-1A track meet Monday, April 6. Graham High School hosted District 6-4A Championships held April 8-9, with final events taking place after press time.

The Bobcats and Ladycats will be represented by 14 athletes in the area track meet, taking place Monday, April 20, in Forestburg. 

Athletes finishing in the top four of their respective events advance in the track and field playoff format.

Steers earn first district win

The Steers bounced back to earn their first win of the district season with an 8-2 victory on the road at Brownwood.

Looking to find their first win since March 6, the Steers entered the district matchup Thursday, April 2 trying to earn their first win of the district schedule after losing back-to-back games in a series against Brock and the first game of the series against Brownwood.

Toby Boenisch and Kyler Alexander scored a pair of runs in the first inning and the Steers never looked back.

Lady Blues stung by Honeybees

While the Lady Blues were able to make solid contact, the team’s struggles continued in a matinee softball game against Stephenville. Despite 10 hits and combined nine drawn walks, the Lady Blues fell 20-6 against the Honeybees.

Ruby Shaffer, Hudson Wright and Kylie Pruitt each had multi-hit games Friday, April 3. Pruitt and Larissa Warren each added doubles. Wright added a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Lady Blues first, Steers fifth at Brock HS Invitational

With the postseason beginning this week for Graham track and field, both Graham High School teams took part in their final tuneups last week. 

Brock High School hosted its annual Brock High School Invitational with 12 girls’ varsity teams and 13 boys’ varsity teams competing Thursday, April 2. 

The girls’ junior varsity meet saw athletes representing eight schools and 13 schools represented in the boys’ JV meet.

Newcastle hosts Coal Mine Relays

Newcastle ISD hosted 11 schools at the Coal Mine Relays, with several standout performances from the Bobcats and Ladycats.

The relay was held Monday, March 30 and was the first of two track meets that will be held at Newcastle. The district track meet will be hosted Monday, April 6 at Newcastle.

Nees advances to regionals

Graham athletes competed this week in the District 6-4A golf tournament, with Steer Jagger Nees coming home with the district championship.

The District 6-4A competition was held March 30-31 at Live Oak Golf Club in Abilene. 

“I’m proud of both the boys and the girls, not just because of scores or results, but because of the kind of kids they are and the way they’ve represented our program,” Head coach Michael Todd said. “They’ve worked hard, they’ve been coachable and they’ve handled the ups and downs of the season really well.”

Tennis doubles advance – Baseball, softball see district losses

Graham High School tennis and golf saw wins at their recent district meets, with both baseball and softball dropping their district games.

GHS tennis shines at district

It was an all-Graham girls’ double final Wednesday, April 1 in the District 6-4A Championship, with the duo of senior Jade Dospapas and junior Kline Krupp defeating teammates senior Hope Jones and junior Stacey Gonzalez.

Lady Blues fall to Lady Lions

The Lady Blue softball team fell 2-0 in a defensive struggle at home on Hogan Field against the Brownwood Lady Lions. The loss dropped the Lady Blues to 1-3 through four games of district play.

Offensively, the Lady Blues were held to two hits Friday, March 27 by Lady Lions pitcher Kaydence Allen, who struck out 11 Lady Blues batters. 

The Lady Blues’ lone hit of the game came from a two-out single to right field by Hudson Wright in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wright, Hadleigh Allen and Kerstin Schupbach each drew walks.

Reese hits the bench at state powerlifting

McCrae Reese was the solo Steer who represented his community during Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championships held last week in Abilene.

Reese competed in the Division 2 competition that was held Friday, March 27 at the Taylor County Expo Center. 

In the 308-pound weight class, McCrae scored a 10th place finish with lifts of 620 pounds on squat, 405 pounds on bench press and 550 pounds on deadlift for a total of 1,575 overall.
