Gov. Abbott addresses mask order

Gov. Greg Abbott took to the television last week to spread a message encouraging Texans to continue following protocols set in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 across the state. Despite saying that shutting down the Texas economy for a second time is the “last option,” Abbott suggested that it could happen again.

Although Gov. Abbott has not explicitly stated that another shut down was on the way, he told KLBK in Lubbock that following his mask order could prevent that from happening.

Young County continues to see spike in positive COVID-19 tests

From June 29 through July 6, Young County had 45 positive COVID-19 tests confirmed, with 32 of them believed to be county residents.

As of Monday, July 6, Young County has tested 1,813 people with 98 confirmed positive results, according to Graham Regional Medical Center. Forty seven of those positive cases are still reported to be active, one of them hospitalized.

City, Chamber cancel, revise Fourth of July festivities

The city of Graham and the Graham Chamber of Commerce announced Thursday night that they decided to cancel or postpone all events that were to be held on the square for the Fourth of July after a spike in COVID-19 cases and an Executive Order from Gov. Greg Abbott mandating masks. The fireworks display continued as scheduled at Young County Arena.

COVID-19 cases continue to arise in Young County

Following a week where Young County saw 21 positive cases, the county started this week with eight positives from Monday and Tuesday.

Young County Local Health Authority, Dr. Pat Martin has continued to inform the community of the ongoing testing due to COVID-19.

Gov. Abbott halts reopening economy, closes bars

One day after halting plans to continue the reopening of the Texas economy, Gov. Greg Abbott announced the closure of all bars as well as other measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Abbott released an executive order, GA-28, Friday morning, which ordered all bars to close by noon on Friday, June 26. Bars may still operate under a take out or delivery service, including alcohol to-go sales per Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

In addition to bars, all restaurants went go back to operating at 50% capacity on June 29.

Unity Walk postponed

With rising numbers of COVID-19 in Young County, Mt. Zion has decided to postpone the Unity Walk, originally scheduled to take place on the square Saturday, June 27. Andi Tate, a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, confirmed that the event has been postponed after a spike in COVID-19 cases and will be pushing it back to a later date.

Graham City Manager Brandon Anderson said that this was an event that a lot were looking forward to and the church had worked hard to establish this event.
