Lady Blues softball prepare for Monday's season-opener

The Lady Blues have begun playing preseason scrimmages with the team completing their fourth scrimmage Monday in preparation for the 2023 softball season. While the team has shown potential with earning nine or more hits in four games, the team has struggled to turn those hits into runs.

Originally scheduled to host Rider and Springtown Saturday, the Lady Blues moved the scrimmages to Graford due to wet field conditions after rain and ice came through the area throughout last week. The team took their home field for their first unofficial game action Monday night against Wylie.

Winter weather cancels, delays area sports

Editors note: The Saturday, Feb. 4 edition of The Graham Leader references a scheduled soccer game at home against Waxahachie Life. That game was canceled Friday morning. Steers and Lady Blues soccer will play Monday, Feb. 6 when they open the district schedule at home against Wichita Falls High School. Lady Blues kick off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Steers at 7:30 p.m. on Newton Field.

Lady Blues soccer earns home win

Lady Blues soccer responded from a sluggish match earlier in the week with one of their most dominant performances of the season. After escaping Bridgeport with a 0-0 tie Tuesday, Jan. 24 the Lady Blues outshot Lake Worth 28-1 in a 2-1 win Saturday, Jan. 28 at Newton Field.

The only shot Lake Worth had during the match was on a free kick with 28:18 remaining in the first half. Prior to the free kick, the Lady Blues had nine shots, including a goal by Olivia Pettus just under 10 minutes into the match.

Steers win thriller over Yellowjackets

The Graham Steers saw a version of the Stephenville Yellowjackets that they were not originally expecting on Friday, Jan. 28 at Stephenville High School. Not known for their 3-point shooting, the Yellowjackets caused problems with it in the first half. Sticking to their game plan, the Steers came home with a 48-46 win after late heroics from Riley Lanham and Levi May.

The Yellowjackets took an early lead and led for most of the first half. Yellowjackets’ Hyson Foreman opened the scoring with an inside basket with 6:53 left in the first quarter.
