Chamber seeking nominations for annual Grahammy awards

The Graham Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for their annual Grahammy awards ceremony held annually alongside the Taste of Graham and Chamber Banquet.

There are four awards alongside the restaurant awards from the Taste of Graham which are Volunteer of the Year, Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year and the Graham Salt Works Award. The awards ceremony annually honors those in the community who give back through community service, commerce or volunteer work.

Commissioners resolve Young County as a second amendment sanctuary

Despite contention on wording in the resolution, the Young County Commissioners Court unanimously resolved Young County as a second amendment sanctuary county Monday, Nov. 25.

The resolution states the commissioners court will not authorize or appropriate funds, resources, employees, agencies, contractors, buildings, detention centers or offices to enforce laws which unconstitutionally infringe on the right of its citizens to own guns.

Stirring the pot

Four Twenty Jim and the Cannabus 2 made a stop in Graham Tuesday and Wednesday as he continues his journey around America promoting the federal legalization of marijuana.

Jim, who was born James Stevens before legally changing his name, said he started his journey March 1, 2014 after he was charged with two counts of sales of marijuana.

OISD, NISD above Region 9 STAAR averages

The Texas Education Agency released their annual Texas Academic Performance Report earlier this month providing an insight to Newcastle and Olney ISD’s State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) performance, graduation rates and teacher salaries.

The STAAR has four levels of performance which are measured highest to lowest by Masters Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level and Did Not Meet Grade Level, which is the only level that is not passing.

GJHS students raise nonprofit funding through Hot Chocolicious event

For a third year, teams of Graham Junior High School students will warm up the community during the Hot Chocolicious competition, battling to win multiple awards for nonprofits through the sale of hot chocolate.

The competition will take place from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, alongside the Christmas parade and holiday events on the Graham downtown square. Forty-seven students are split into 10 teams for the event which doubles as an education program for the participants.
