Retired Graford coach named to TABC Hall of Fame

Former Graford High School basketball coach Charles Hearne will be inducted into the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame during a May 20 ceremony, beginning at 6 p.m. Hearne coached at Graford for 18 of his 30-year coaching career before retiring after the 2002 season. After retiring Hearne remained near Graford, owning and operating a ranch east of town. “I am thankful that we live in the Graford community,” Hearne said.

Texas Tech coach coming to Graham

Texas Tech University men’s basketball coach Chris Beard will drop by the Graham Country Club May 10. Beard will be the speaker for the Annual “Lakes Chapter” Ex-Students Meeting. The event will be held next Wednesday, May 10 at 6 p.m. at the Graham Country Club. Tech Exes from Stephens, Jack and Young counties, prospective students, and friends of Texas Tech are invited to attend. Although new to Texas Tech, Beard has an extensive history in the Lone Star State.

GHS announces girls summer sports camps

Although the 2016-17 sports season is just wrapping up, preparation for the 2017-18 season is just getting underway with announced plans for sports camps in June. The Lady Blues Basketball Camp will open the summer with incoming freshmen scheduled to begin camp June 5 and wrap up June 7. The cost is $75 and it will run from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Graham Softball Camp will take place a week later with incoming second through fifth-grade athletes working out from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. while incoming sixth through ninth-grade students will work out from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dooley, Hays to compete for state titles

Graham High School Track and Field Team throwers junior Hunter Dooley and senior Jack Hays will each compete for a state title after punching their tickets to Austin during last week’s Region 1 Track and Field Meet in Lubbuck. Dooley and Hays were the only two Graham athletes to advance to the UIL State Track and Field Meet, with Dooley taking first in the shot put while Hays took second in the discus. “I think we’re on an eight-year streak of having throwers in,” Graham coach Clay McChristian said. “... Lady Blues advance after day-two sweep

GRAHAM— Strong hitting and a two-game, 13-inning performance by freshman pitcher Emma Southerland advanced the Graham High School Softball Team to the second round of the state playoffs. The Lady Blues took both games of last Friday’s playoff doubleheader, edging Sweetwater 2-1 in game one and exploding in game two for a 10-4 victory. “I was tired but I knew I could make it through it,” said Southerland, who tallied 16 strikeouts in two games. “‘My teammates would tell me ‘you can do this.’ I believed in myself and they believed in me … I believed in them wholeheartedly.

Burkburnett edges Graham for second place in district

WICHITA FALLS— The Graham High School Baseball Team’s climb to the state tournament became much tougher following last Friday’s Region 1 District 4 tournament loss to Burkburnett. GRAHAM— The Graham High School baseball team’s 6-1 victory over district rival Vernon set up a Tuesday night showdown with Iowa Park to potentially determine the outright Region 1 District 6 champion. GRAHAM— The Graham High School softball team won the Region 1 District 6 championship after besting Vernon 8-7 in extra innings Friday night. The Lady Blues’ ending to the regular season was something fit for fiction as they made a dramatic turnaround to take the district 6 title after starting the season 1-7. “I have two daughters; it’s like I blinked and they grew up,” Graham coach Philip Irby said. “This season has been just like that. Those freshmen have grown up so much. Those were freshmen making those plays. It’s been fun to watch.

Newcastle, Bryson tab athletes for regional meet

The Newcastle High School girls track and field team took first in last week’s area meet, edging out Gorman by a point, while the Bryson Cowgirls finished third with 84 points. The Lady Bobcats and Cowgirls each had strong showings while their male counterparts also performed well, with dozens making the top four in his or her event to advance to Friday’s regional meet. GRAHAM— More than 30 Graham High School track and field athletes advanced to the Area Track and Field Meet with the Lady Blues capturing the Region 1 District 6 Meet title in the process. The Lady Blues took first after nearly doubling their nearest competitor in points while the Steers tied Hirschi for second place with 133 points, 42 points behind meet champion Vernon. Girls results Junior Jasmine Sims’ first-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (15.95 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (49.94) gave the Lady Blues a boost in the final day of competition.
