Bobcats rout Gorman; Jonesboro Eagles up next

STRAWN - If there’s two things that go hand in hand, it’s Newcastle Bobcats football and the playoffs. Another thing many associate with Newcastle is winning in the playoffs, which is exactly what happened Friday night. The Bobcats (8-3) used a smothering defensive attack combined with a high octane offense to overwhelm the Gorman Panthers, leading to a 58-12 victory in the bi-district round of the playoffs from Greyhound Stadium in Strawn. Gorman held the Bobcats’ offense in check for the much of the first half, and Newcastle led 8-0 going into the second quarter.

It’s safe to say things went according to plan. Newcastle once again came out strong in the first quarter, scoring 32 points against the Panthers, before adding on another 31 in the second to trigger the 45-point mercy rule as the Bobcats claimed a 63-12 victory from Newcastle High School. “We played really well offensively against Saint Jo,” Newcastle coach John Eli said.

Bryson Cowboys look to tame May Tigers in opening round

Following a grueling schedule during the regular season, the last thing the Bryson Cowboys needed in the opening round of the playoffs was another stiff challenge. Unfortunately, this is what awaits them Thursday night as they will take on the May Tigers at 7:30 p.m. from Gordon High School. May enters the Bi-district round of the playoffs with a perfect 10-0 record and are currently ranked No. 10 in the state of Texas according to sixmanfootball.com along with being touted as the No. 5 ranked six man team in the division 1 bracket of the playoffs.

Bryson volleyball falls in area round

This was a harsh lesson the Bryson Cowgirls volleyball team learned Saturday afternoon in the area round of the playoffs against the Avalon Lady Eagles. Ahead 24-20 in the second set, Bryson failed to finish off Avalon and even the match, as the Lady Eagles stormed back with six straight points and eventually finished off a sweep of the Cowgirls, ending their season at the Boyd High School Gymnasium.
